Texas One of 13 States to Receive Funds to Expand Health Coverage |
HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has announced $70.9 million in grants to 13
states to support the expansion of health care coverage for their uninsured
populations. Texas is slated to receive $9.5 million.
The grants are funded under the new State Health Access Program (SHAP), an
outgrowth of the agency's State Planning Grant program that operated from
2000-2007. This program enabled many states to develop innovative plans that
increased health insurance coverage for their uninsured residents. The grants, to be made over a 5-year period, require a 20 percent match unless a
state demonstrates a financial hardship. In addition, states must show that
they are able to sustain the program after federal funding has expired. Read the press release.

Recession Turns Graying Workforce Grayer |
A Pew Research Report, " Recession Turns a Graying Office Grayer," released this month indicates older adults are staying in the workforce longer while younger adults are staying out of the workforce longer. These trends, which have developed over the past two decades, have intensified with the current economic recession. The report cites one government estimate that 93% of the growth in the U.S. labor force from 2006 to 2016 will be among workers ages 55 and older. Older workers are less likely than their younger counterparts to work to support themselves and their families and are more likely to work because it makes them feel useful or productive. |
