F as in Fat - State Obesity Prevention Efforts Fail
 A recent report by the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation reports that obesity policies are failing in America.  The report found that adult obesity rates increased in 23 states and did not decrease in any states.  Obesity rates for children are at or above 30% in 30 states.  Click here for more information and an interactive state-by-state map.
Green Jobs Task Force Report
solar wind energyThe Austin Chamber of Commerce has released a Green Job Task Force Initiative Report that outlines recommendations for how our community can grow green jobs in our region.  Capital Area Workforce Solutions, Austin Community College, Austin Energy and others served on the task force.  The report provides a roadmap for regional collaboration and will enhance opportunities for local groups to apply for American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds dedicated to green job growth. The roadmap identifies green collar job opportunities in our region, identifies training providers and funding opportunities.

What is the Future of Affordable Housing in Downtown Austin?
The City of Austin will present revisions to the Downtown Austin Plan affordable housing and density bonus reports from 6-8 p.m. Monday, July 13th at Town Lake Center, 721 Barton Springs Road, Room 130.

City Consultants provided recommendations for a downtown density bonus program and affordable housing strategy in May.  The City sought public feedback on the recommendations and made revisions to the draft reports based on the feedback.  At this town hall meeting, City staff will summarize the revisions made to the consultants' earlier reports, and the public will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback. Final recommendations about Downtown density bonuses and affordable housing will be presented to City Council at a briefing on July 23rd, with possible action thereafter.
 
The consultants' revised density bonus and affordable housing report will be posted on the City of Austin's Downtown Austin Plan website on July 6th. 
Austin ISD Seeks Volunteers for Dropout Recovery Effort

Austin ISD seeks English and Spanish speaking volunteers for a drop out recovery initiative called We C.A.R.E. (Connect, Address, Recover, Educate).  The drop out challenge is a community challenge requiring a community response.  High School dropout rates have a negative impact not only on the individual but also on the community at large.  Volunteers will be asked to make weekend and evening phone calls to students and/or parents of students on AISD's dropout recovery list. Volunteers are asked to contact a minimum of 14 students between August 1st - 14th.  For more information, email dropoutprevention@austinisd.org or call 512-414-0324.
 
H-E-B Austin Symphony July 4th Concert and Fireworks
fireworksMore than 100,000 people are expected to gather at Auditorium Shores this Saturday night for the largest Independence Day celebration in Austin.  The Austin Symphony will begin playing at 8:30 p.m. on the City Terrace at the north end of the Long Center for the Performing Arts.  Fireworks, on the shores of Lady Bird Lake, will begin at 9:30 p.m.  Learn more at the ASO website.

Bike racks will be available at the north end of the round about on Riverside Drive.  Capital Metro is offering additional regular and late night routes to accommodate the event
 
Austin Business Journal Wants 'Health Care Heroes'
health heroesThe Austin Business Journal is accepting nominations for Health Care Heroes.   Hero categories include public health, volunteer, educator, health care professional, physician, nurse, employer/business leader, community outreach and civic/government.  The deadline for nominations is July 3rd.  Nominate your hero at http://austin.bizjournals.com/austin/nomination/.
Coping With Mental Illness in Jail
The National Institute of Corrections will host "The Mentally Ill in Jail:  Whose Problem Is It Anyway?" on July 15th.  This live, three-hour satellite/internet broacast will provide an overview of opportunities to help organizations prepare to work with people suffering from mental illness in jails.  Learn more at the National Institute of Corrections website.
Capital Metro Service Plan 2020
What will the bus system in Austin look like in ten years?  Capital Metro's Service Plan 2020 is a comprehensive analysis of the transit system that will provide a roadmap for growth over the next ten years.  Three specific goals are to:
  • design bus services to better meet the needs of the region,
  • increase transit ridership to manage traffic congenstion and improve air quality, and
  • increase cost effectiveness of bus operations.

Risk Management and Finance Summit for Nonprofits
The Nonprofit Risk Management Center, based in Washington DC, is holding its annual conference in Austin September 20th - 22nd at the ATT Executive Education and Conference Center at UT.  Non-profit leaders from across the country will come together to learn about risk management, finance and human resources.  Early registration ends July 31st.  Learn more at www.nonprofitrisk.org.
