CAN Councils Focus on Federal Stimulus Act
|
CAN Resource Council Partners will share how they will utilize Federal Stimulus Funds and will discuss potential coordination among agencies at the CAN Resource Council meeting this Friday, April 17th at 2 p.m. in the City Boards and Commissions Room. The Center for Public Policy Priorities will give a legislative overview of the State Budget and Federal Stimulus Funds at the CAN Community Council meeting on Monday, April 20th at 5:30 p.m. in the City Board and Commissions Room. Both meetings will be televised live on Channel 6. Check the Channel 6 schedule for re-broadcast times. Check the new CAN "Federal Stimulus Plan - Local Impact" web page for information about the Stimulus Plan and for updates.

Austin Council and Mayoral Candidates Forum
|
The Austin Ethics Review Commission will hold a candidates forum for those running for Austin Mayor and four City Council seats in the May 9th general election. The forum will be held tomorrow night, Thursday, April 16th from 6 - 9 p.m. at the Austin City Council Chambers, 301 West Second St. The League of Women Voters will moderate the forum which will be broadcast live on Cable Channel 6 and will also be available to watch on-demand at www.cityofaustin.org.
This is the official mandated Candidates Forum held by the Ethics Review Commission prior to every local election. The public is invited to attend. Questions from the audience will be accepted.

CAN leadership will use the results of this survey to direct the work of CAN. The survey will remain open through April 22nd.

One-Time Payment of $250 for Social Security and SSI Recipients
|
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provides for a one-time payment of $250 to individuals who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security benefits. Eligible beneficiaries should receive this payment no later than the first week of June 2009. The one-time payment will be a separate payment that will not be included in the regular monthly benefit payment.

Portrait of Unauthorized Immigrants in U.S.

A Portrait of Unauthorized Immigrants in the United States by the Pew Research Center finds that 73% of the children of unauthorized immigrants were born in this country and are U.S. citizens. The report, released earlier this week, also finds that unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. are more geographically dispersed and are more likely than other U.S. residents to live in a household with a spouse and children. Do Good

The Austin American Statesman and good2gether are launching a new partnership to connect people with the causes they care about. Non-profits enter their information into the "Do Good" channel. Then, when people read articles on Statesman.com, the program will display for the reader opportunities to become engaged in the issue they are reading about.
The new "Do Good Channel" will allow non-profits to leverage a readership of more than 1 million unique visits per month. Travis County's Community Impact Report
|
Travis County has released its annual Community Impact Report which provides an overview of the County's $4.6 million investments in community-based social service programs and summarizes community conditions.
Some community conditions highlights found in the 281-page report include:
- Median income fell 7% from 2002 to 2007, once adjusted for inflation.
- Between 2007 and 2008, Austin Energy received 41% more requests for utility assistance and experienced a 33% increase in the number of customers with deferred payment plans.
- 58% of Travis County residents who receive food stamps are children under the age of 18.
- The number of food stamp recipients rose 57% between May and December 2008.
- Foreclosure rates rose 33% from nearly 3,500 in 2007 to nearly 5,000 in 2008.
- An estimated 65,890 households, 17% of all Travis County households, spent 50% or more of their income on housing.

ReadyBy21 has released its Go To College 2009 Directory. The Go-to-College Guidebook was created as a college readiness resource manual for students, their parents and counselors and other youth service providers serving high school students in grades 9 through 12 in Travis, Williamson and Hays counties. The manual is intended to provide information for students preparing to attend post secondary higher education institutions. |
Financial Fitness Week April 20 - 26

 Financial Fitness Greater Austin is a public education and awareness campaign designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances. A full week of seminars will be presented through the coordinated efforts of the Alliance for Economic Inclusion, State Senator Kirk Watson, the Financial Literacy Coalition of Central Texas and over 67 organizations in the Greater Austin area. Conley-Guerrero Health Fair 2009

The Conley-Guerrero Senior Activity Center will hold a health fair on Friday, April 24th from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. The Center is located at 808 Nile Street. Community Discussions on Transportation Equity
|
Capital Metro Board Member Mike Manor will launch a monthly discussion on equity in transportation. The series of discussions are co-hosted by Huston-Tillotson University & David Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Community members concerned about developing an equitable transportation system are invited to participate in the group which will use the book "Highway Robbery-Transportation Racism & New Routes To Equity" as a launching point for discussion.
The first meeting will be held on Friday, May 15th from 5:45 - 8:30 p.m.in the Agard-Lovinggood Lecture Hall-Huston-Tillotson University, 900 Chicon. Subsequent meetings will be held on the second Friday of every month.

Cool Tools - Free Fun Ways to Communicate Information

At this year's NAPC Conference, we learned about many free tools to help organizations communicate their messages. This section of CANews will focus on a different tool each week. This week we are sharing " Many Eyes" which allows you to upload data and portray it through a myriad of eye-catching maps, charts and graphing options.
