Roundtable Discussion on State Stimulus Spending for Homelessness |
The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs will have a Roundtable Discussion of possible options for the implementation of the state portion of the Homelessness Prevention Funds made available through The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The Roundtable is to be held on April 2nd from 1 - 4 p.m. at the Thompson Conference Center, 2405 Robert Dedman Drive.

ER Visits by 9 People Cost $3 Million Over 6 Years

A story in this morning's Austin American Statesman reports on an analysis of frequent visitors to local emergency rooms by the Integrated Care Collaboration. The study found that eight people from Austin and one from Luling visited emergency rooms 2,678 times over the past six years, costing the taxpayers, the hospitals and others $3 million. The ICC is working with institutions that serve uninsured and low-income patients to find solutions to emergency room overuse and misuse. Read the full article.

National Public Health Week April 6 - 12

"Building the Foundation for a Healthy America" is the theme of this year's National Public Health Week April 6th - 12th. Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department will join communities around the country in celebrating the week with free health activities.
"The goal of National Public Health Week is to raise awareness nationally and locally of public health's critical role in ensuring a healthy America", said David Lurie, Director of Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department. "Public health is all around us. From prenatal care to immunizations, to the water we drink, to the restaurants in which we eat, to the helmets we wear while riding bikes, to the many programs promoting physical activity--public health impacts our community." Federal Stimulus Act - Local Impact

CAN has created a web page with links to information regarding the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
CAN has also sent a letter to local legislators encouraging them to change state policy to enhance the State's public assistance system to better serve our communities and to draw more federal stimulus dollars into our local economies.

AAHSA Candidate Forum |
The public is invited to attend Austin Area Human Services Association's (AAHSA) Mayoral and City Council Candidates Forum on Thursday, April 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Mexican American Cultural Center, 600 River Street. Austin voters will go to the polls May 9th to elect a new mayor and council members in Places 1, 2, 5 and 6. Click here to see a list of those running for office.

Financial Fitness Week KickOff

Financial Fitness Greater Austin will hold a Press Conference and Kickoff Media Event on April 16th at 11 a.m.. at the AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center at the University of Texas at Austin. Financial Fitness Greater Austin is a public education and awareness campaign designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances.
Local businesses, financial institutions, schools, not-for-profits, government agencies and the media are working together to stress the importance of financial literacy during Financial Fitness Week April 20 - 26. Check the Financial Fitness website for more information and a calendar of events, educational seminars and activities to be offered throughout the week for all income levels and all facets of personal finance.

Moving Children's Mental Health Forward in Texas |
Dr. Janice Cooper, author of Unclaimed Children Revisited: The Status of Mental Health Policy in the United States and acting director of the National Center for Children in Poverty at Columbia University, will speak April 21st from 9 am to noon at the John Winters Building, 701 West 51st Street.
Dr. Cooper will provide an overview of the the Unclaimed Children report's findings, highlighting recommendations for advancing child health and well-being in Texas. Through a facilitated process, participants will discuss the findings as they relate to current state and local child and family initiatives and identify mechanisms to assess areas of strengths, address shortcomings and to plan and assess cross-system improvements to child mental health policy for the future.

Alliance of Black School Educators Summit |
 The Austin Area Alliance of Black School Educators 2009 SPRING EDUCATION SUMMIT will be held Saturday, April 18th from 8:30 a.m. - noon at Pflugerville ISD's Connally High School, 13212 North Lamar. Educators, parents, students, and community stakeholders are invited to hear nationally renowned author, Mychal Wynn, who will speak about "Creating a College-Bound Culture and Increasing Students Achievement."

Hispanic Futures Conference Connects Students to 21st Century Opportunities |
"College, Technology and the Workforce of the 21st Century" is the theme of Austin ISD's fourth Hispanic Futures Conference on Saturday, April 18th from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the ACC Riverside Campus, 1020 Grove Blvd. There will be speakers, exhibits, food, door prizes and organizations with information about education, programs, and resources available for students and families.
