Senate Finance Committee to Recieve Public Testimony on Health & Human Services
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission and the Department of State Health Services are presenting their budgets to the Senate Finance Committee today.  The committee will receive public testimony Thursday and Friday. Learn more.
Hunger Advocacy Conference
How_hungryCapital Area Food Bank invites you to learn how public policy and activism can change the lives of the hungry in our community.  Speakers include Joel Berg, author of All You Can Eat: How Hungry is America? and Congressman Lloyd Doggett.  The event will be held on Wednesday, February 18th from 1 - 4 p.m. at the George Washington Carver Museum, 1165 Angelina Street.  RSVP to Lisa Goddard by Friday, February 13th.
Hispanic Quality of Life Initiative
hispanic_familyCouncil Member Mike Martinez and other Austin City Council Members will officially launch the City of Austin's Hispanic Quality of Life Initiative at a press conference tomorrow, February 12th at 9:15 am at City Hall. The first of four community forums on the Hispanic Quality of Life Initiative will be held on Tuesday, February 24th from 6:30 - 8:30 pm at the Austin High School Cafeteria.  For more information about this initiative and the other forums, visit the Hispanic Quality of Life website.
Feria para Aprender a Success!
Feria2009Over 7,700 Spanish-speaking parents and children attended a Spanish-language education fair at Berger Center last weeked.  The third annual Feria para Aprender was sponsored by Spanish language media in partnership with AISD, United Way, Community Action Network and Austin Partners in Education.  
 
Feria featured information about the importance of completing high school and going to college, and emphasized the value of being fluent in more than one language. One issue of concern revealed at the education fair was that 98% of the children who participated in free eye screenings needed glasses.

City Manager Mark Ott will discuss the implications of the current recession on the City's budget at this Friday's CAN Resource Council meeting.  (Read this Statesman article about a plan to cut the City budget by $20 million.)
 
St. David's Community Health Foundation will also share results of a recent survey of elderly people in Central Texas.
 
The meeting begins at 1 p.m. at City Hall and will be broadcast live on Cable Channel 6.

English as a Second Language - February Spotlight Issue
ilivehereCurrent projections show by the year 2040, Texas will be 24% Anglo, and 59% Hispanic.   Most educational funding models have not followed this tremendous surge in our population, with current allocations being made on year 2000 numbers. As a consequence, the need for programs for English Language Learners is at an all time high and growing.
 
English as a Second Language is "I Live Here, I Give Here's" the Spotlight issue for February.  Join a panel discussion featuring local efforts on February 23rd from 6:00 - 7:00 pm at Any Baby Can, 1121 East 7th Street.  Learn more.
Central Texas/Transatlantic Rail Workshop
What can we learn about solving our regional transportation needs from Paris, Stuttgart, Copenhagen, or Amsterdam?  European rail experts will visit Texas this month to share their perspective in a series of Central Texas/Transatlantic Rail Workshops throughout Central Texas sponsored by the German Marshall Fund.  The Austin workshop will be held Friday, February 20th at the UT Thompson CenterLearn more and register for this day-long event.

Free Financial Coaching

Foundation Communities offers free one-on-one financial coaching to individuals earning less than $25,000 annually and families earning less than $50,000.  In addition to a free credit report, participants will be coached to organize their finances, create a budget, reduce debt, fix credit and save for the future.  Financial coaching is offered Mondays through Saturdays at the Community Tax Center located at 3036 South 1st Street. Proposals Sought to Promote Integrated Care
HoggThe Hogg Foundation for Mental Health is accepting proposals for Texas-based 501(c)3 organizations to coordinate a statewide learning community on integrated health care.  Applications are due March 16th.
 
Integrated health care is an emerging national movement to improve people's health by treating physical and behavioral illnesses together.  The grant will fund a learning community to provide an opportunity to share information, tools and resources.  Learn more about this grant opportunity.
Pre-k Day at the Capitol
E3AlliancePre-k Day at the Capitol, the largest early education advocacy event in Texas, is on February 17, 2009.   Pre-k Day will include a  model pre-k classroom, complete with young learners, in the ground floor Rotunda and a press conference at 11 am on the South Capitol Steps.  Learn more. http://www.tecec.org/pages.php/prek_day.html
Uncompensated Care for Hurricane Evacuees
In an effort to estimate the amount of uncompensated care provided to Hurricane evacuees, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) requests that providers complete the "Texas Hurricane-Related Uncompensated Care Survey," which can be accessed through the TMHP website. For your estimate to be included in the state's uncompensated care estimate, you must complete the survey no later than February 12, 2009. Survey link is at the bottom on this HHSC webpage.
Caring for Your Loved One with Alzheimers
