BNC's 2009 Poverty Fact Sheet |
Caritas, a leading provider of rent and utility assistance for the working poor, experienced more than a 500% increase in requests for assistance from eligible families in Oct. - Dec. 2008 compared to Oct.- Dec. 2007. This is just some of the data included in the Basic Needs Coalition's new Poverty Fact Sheet. The two-page summary draws on data from the American Community Survey, the Center for Public Policy Priorities and local agencies to provide a statistical overview of poverty in our community. |
Travis County Seeks Input on CDBG Funds |
Travis County invites residents and services providers to identify community needs and recommend projects for CDBG funding in the unincorporated areas of the county.
Over the last three years, Travis County has received an average of $840,000 in CDBG funding. CDBG funding is targeted to benefit low- and moderate-income residents who live in unincorporated areas of Travis County.
Let the County know how you think these funds should be used by filling out a Citizen Participation Form, by submitting a Project Proposal, or by testifying at one of five public hearings to be held in February. Visit the County's CDBG website for a meeting schedule and more information. |
City of Austin Five Year Consolidated Plan |
Let the City of Austin know how you think an estimated $69 million in federal housing and community development funds should be spent over the next five years. Immigration, Education and our Future: Policy and Practice |
Austin Community College and St. Edward's University will host their second annual immigration conference on Friday, February 6th from 8 am - 5 pm. National and regional speakers will review the status and impact of immigration policy; facilitator-led discussions will focus on practice within educational, governmental and social service agency settings. The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) calls on parents, educators, policymakers, and communities to join forces to ensure children are healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. The Learning Compact Redefined: A Call to Action, recommends a new compact with our young people. "Just Immigration" Monday Night Speaker Series |
The Austin Immigrant Rights Coalition (AIRC) and Thematic Initiatives and Community Engagement (TICE) of UT will host "Just Immigration," a speaker series on the topic of immigration every Monday night during February. The four Monday night sessions will cover border issues, detention, workplace raids, and collaboration between local law enforcement and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Learn more. |

Capital MetroRail Open House |
 Capital Metro welcomes the community to one of five open houses at neighborhood MetroRail stations in February. Click here for more information and Open House schedule.
MetroRail service begins March 30th with service every 30 minutes during weekday rush hours. MetroRail cars include wireless internet service and bicycle racks. All Rail Stations and trains are wheelchair accessible.
Regular fares are $1 to travel within one zone and $1.50 for travel within 2 zones. Military and students 18 and under are eligible for reduced fares. Seniors and Disability Fare Card holders (with Capital Metro-issued ID) ride free. |
Housing Texas Mobilizing Support for State's Housing Trust Fund |
Housing Texas invites people interested in advocating for safe, decent, affordable housing to meet on Tuesday, February 3rd from 10 am- 1 pm at Lyons Gardens, 2720 Lyons Rd. The group will discuss opportunities to collaborate around affordable housing initiatives in the 81st Legislative Session, especially efforts to provide a dedicated revenue source to the Texas Housing Trust Fund. Nominations for "Community Stewardship Awards" |
Envision Central Texas is now accepting nominations for Community Stewardship Awards. The award recognizes and honors the innovative people, projects and processes that are addressing the growth challenges facing our region in ways that will move us closer to a vision for our future that preserves and enhances our natural resources, economic vitality, social equity, and overall quality of living.
Local non-profit and community organizations, businesses, cities, counties, developers, builders, designers, media, neighborhood groups and others based in the five-county Central Texas region (Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis and Williamson counties) are encouraged to submit applications for the annual ECT Community Stewardship Awards.
