AUSTRALIAN LED XPD'S ALL OVER THE WORLD!
The difference between a good trip and an absolutely awesome one is the people you trek, kayak and climb with. The energy between like minded people, the spirit shared by the group can either make or break an expedition.
No Roads has some of the best Guides around. They not only organise the behind the scenes things, but are great travel companions.
We invite you to join them on these great expeditions at no extra charge to you. If there is adventure you have in mind for 2008, check out our Australian Expeditions first before deciding where you should go.

FIRST EVER WARTIME KOKODA TRACK DONE.
In his definitive book "Kokoda A Field Guide", Bill James shows that the wartime track to Mission Ridge ran from the bottom of Kagi Airfield, to the main Track just north of Brigade Hill, bypassing Efogi 1 and 2 altogether.
In September, our team and a group from United Way in Geelong, Victoria, decided they would try and walk the original Track.
The going was very difficult indeed. The Track was well grown over and ran straight down a very steep slope to a village garden. At times the only thing that would stop a fall would be a quick grasp to a suspending vine or a clump of grass.
Determined, the group pushed on down to the first creek crossing, though we were unsure exactly where it was. Our porter team finally found it and the group moved on, this time up steep terrain.
After nearly 3 hours of slogging, we came to a ridgeline that was sparsely populated by trees (mainly eucalyptus) and with the midday sun beating down on us, we were starting to feel weary.
Finally, the group reached the post war Track again in a time that would have been just a little slower than if they had trekked through Efogi.
We believe we are the first trekking group to do this Track. It was a great adventure and a real highlight of the trip for both the Australians and the team from Kagi.

2008 EXPLORATION XPDS SOON TO BE RELEASED Is it really possible in todays world that there are places that haven't been explored? You betcha! 2008 is gearing up to being one of our best Exploration XPD years. At the moment we have 4 Exploration XPD's though we believe this may increase to 5. First we have our Northern Exploration kayaking trip to Kadavu Island in Fiji. Postponed last year due to political unrest, Fiji is well on its way back to normal peaceful existence (though nothing really changed on Kadavu last year anyway). This will be an awesome trip to some of the most pristine waters on the planet. The second trip is another kayaking journey, this time from Victoria to Tasmania across the notorious Bass Strait. While this has been done before, it hasn't been done on a commercial basis. The XPD will be supported by a Catamaran. Third, we are off to East Timor, to reenact the Sparrow Force retreat through the East Timor mountains in 1942. This small Australian Force harassed the Japanese for months, keeping much needed Japanese resources away from PNG and the Solomon Islands. Finally, we are back to Kyrgystan to climb hitherto unclimbed summits in our Virgin Summits XPD.
As you can see, we have heaps of exploring to do, so why not join us in a trip of a lifetime. Want to know more about our Exploration XPD's? |

DEALING WITH SLIPPERY SLOPES? WHAT TO DO!
You are heading down a slippery, muddy slope somewhere in an Indonesia jungle and those $300 boots you bought just don't seem to be worth it as your feet constantly start to slide, downwards. You try to hold onto the thick foliage but your hands get cut and start to burn from some exotic poison. The only way out is down, but you feel the only way you will get there is either on your bottom the whole way or in a body bag. What do you do?
There is a great technique used by experienced trekkers that will stop you from inevitably falling down that hill.
To succeed you will need two walking poles. If you don't have any you will need to cut two from the jungle.
Here we go. Before you make your first step, plant one of the sticks into the ground (not too deep as you want to be able to pull it out) where you will be placing your first foot. Once this is done, place the foot from the same side as the planted stick behind it so that its wedged there without it sliding down the hill. Once comfortable, do the same for the second walking pole, planting it where you feel comfortable to place your next foot step.
By using this technique, you no longer need to grab onto foliage and it creates your own stop point for your feet when a root or rock is not available. Read more Survival Tips! |

Mt Kenya's Snow Capped Peaks
Often forgotten because of its neighbouring sister; Kilimanjaro; Mt Kenya we believe is a more beautiful mountain to climb. Mt Kenya has some of the most dramatic mountain peaks in all of Africa, and while the globe is heating up, she still has glaciers and snow capped peaks.
Mt Kenya has several summits, some accessible by trekkers while the true summit can only be reached by mountaineers. Want to know more? |
