have become one of the smartest decisions we ever made.  Allowing users to post comments on the web is always a scary thing for a company.  You never know what people will say.  But it has turned out to be a great place.  We've learned one thing over the years, our customers are almost always smarter than we are.  Read through the forums and you'll see evidence of that.

So, if you have a tough, off-the-wall, or strange question related to text to speech, jump into the forums and post your question.  There is a really good chance several people will jump in with solutions or suggestions.  One good example of this type of thing is when it comes to difficult pronunciation issues.  We've recently seen users jump in with great suggestions on how to use regular expressions in the pronunciation editor to do things like

  • Correct how voices speak some currency Values
  • Using the editor to create shortcuts for voice change tags
  • Creating additional pauses for some pronunciation characters
When you get a chance, drop by the user forums and see for your self the power of a great product and thousands of really smart users.
TextAloud Brings Lectures to Life for Busy Stay-at-Home Mom and Returning Student
Back to School
Like many parents in today's hectic and fast-paced world, Adrien Curry is constantly seeking new solutions to managing her time even while juggling a multitude of tasks for kids and home.  A teacher and dedicated stay-at-home parent of five, as well as a student pursuing a Master's in Waldorf education, Adrien wanted to find a tool that would help her study her online college lectures while keeping an eye on her young children at the same time.  After a search for Text to Speech (TTS) solutions, Adrien came across TextAloud, which proved to be easy to install on Adrien's PC, and was an immediate success at helping with her schooling, allowing her to export her lectures, assignments, articles and more to audio files that she could listen to even while she cared for her young children, managed the house, ran errands, and more.

"It's a lifesaver!" comments Adrien.  "I have several lengthy online lectures for class, and TextAloud works really well to help me watch my kids and listen to the lectures instead of tiring out my eyes from being glued to a screen."

TextAloud proved useful to Adrien not only in listening to required college lectures, but also in her evaluation of other students' work, which is another important yet often time-consuming aspect of her studies.  "In this area, TextAloud easily saves me one to two hours a day," she comments.  The program also proved valuable in providing relief from extensive headache-inducing time at the computer.  "I would definitely recommend TextAloud for anyone who gets fatigue symptoms from computer time," she adds.  "TextAloud also helps me proofread my own work--it especially helps when my eyes are tired, but my ear readily picks up my grammatical errors I would otherwise miss, and sometimes helps me hear where I could reword my thoughts better, too. "

While TextAloud soon proved to be invaluable to Adrien in her life as an online student, she soon found other uses for the software in her daily life, as well.  "With TextAloud," she laughs, "I can listen to e-mails, fold laundry and make sure my toddler and baby are not eating cat food -- or thinking that the kitty litter is a new sandbox!"  She has also enjoyed involving her children in the technology in fun ways as well.  "The kids will type in funny things for the software to say, and everyone laughs. It's been fun introducing them to this kind of technology, and it gets them interested in their typing skills too!"

Adrien is now sold on Text to Speech technology and its usefulness, whether in the school, in the home, or in the workplace.  "I'm more productive at school and more relaxed in my home," she comments.  "But I really knew Text to Speech was a valid means of communication when I found myself practically rolling on the floor laughing while listening to some entertaining anecdotal reading read aloud by the software. TextAloud is excellent!"

TextAloud Helps Guide Dog Trainer Cover the Outback

OutbackBeth Helmers loves her unique and rewarding job traveling all over Australia as a Guide Dog Orientation and Mobility Instructor, but dealing with her job's commutes and long hours on the road can be challenging.  Luckily, she discovered TextAloud.  Beth manages one of the Guide Dogs NSW/ACT offices in Eastern Australia, and helps people with vision losses to learn to travel independently and safely in their communities, workplaces, and schools.  "Much of my work is geared toward helping people use their other senses to feel confident accomplishing a variety of tasks that can be intimidating at first," she explains, "like crossing roads, navigating in busy malls and the like.  It's great seeing people gain confidence in themselves."

Beth's work takes her all over the Eastern part of Australia, and has sometimes encompassed commutes of hundreds or even thousands of miles.  When she first discovered TextAloud, Beth was spending ten to twelve days at a time on the road navigating an Australian state roughly the size of California.  While the satisfaction and joy of her job made the rough commutes worth the effort, she nevertheless found herself trying to fill long stretches of drive time while also mourning the loss of that time from both work and leisure perspectives.

Beth turned to TextAloud, intrigued by the idea of exporting her reading to text that she could listen to anywhere. She found the program easy to install and quickly began to use the program to output books, articles, and more into surprisingly natural-sounding speech.  Priced starting at $29.95, TextAloud is an affordable and simple PC program that converts text into spoken audio which can then be listened to via a PC, laptop, or a huge assortment of other mobile devices.  "I wouldn't have gotten much chance to read if it weren't for TextAloud," she comments.  "By exporting interesting articles and books to TextAloud, I've been able to keep my mind active and alert even while driving over a large territory."

Beth soon discovered that the program's Text to Speech capabilities weren't just for books, but were also just as valuable for stories, e-mails, assignments, even study materials.  "It was great to make practical use of the time behind the wheel," she adds.  "In fact, I studied for my final written exams to become a Guide Dog Instructor using TextAloud."

This soon led to Beth's recommendation of the program to her many visually impaired clients as an alternative to expensive screen readers.  "Many of my visually impaired clients can't afford the screen reading programs, which are often prohibitively expensive," she explains. "TextAloud's low cost is one of its huge bonuses, and why I've recommended it to so many of my clients."  For her clients simply seeking an easy yet versatile Text to Speech alternative for their reading, TextAloud was perfect.

Beth does most of the listening to her Text to Speech on a Sandisk MP3 player and her Sony Laptop.  Her favorite voices available for TextAloud include Premium Voices Crystal and Mike from AT&T Natural Voices™.  "I like the increasingly natural intonations and pronunciations that are available, and I've just bought a Norwegian voice so that I can keep up with some of my Norwegian books and articles left over from my years living there, as well," she adds.

Ultimately, TextAloud has proven indispensable to Beth on her long drives, a partner in keeping her awake and alert.  "Most importantly, TextAloud allows me the opportunity to listen to things I want to hear that aren't otherwise available in an audio format," she adds, "such as e-mails, websites, and stories friends and I have written.  Thanks to TextAloud, I've spent many a happy hour listening to and enjoying things downloaded off the internet."
