Letter from the Program Coordinator |
It has been a busy summer and fall. As a result of a new grant awarded from the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ME CDC), the Healthy Maine Partnership (HMP) Program housed at the City of Portland, Health and Human Services Department has grown to cover two regions of Cumberland County and taken on some county-wide projects. This expanded program, the Eastern Cumberland County Health Coalition (ECCHCO) is home to Healthy Portland (covering Portland) and Healthy Casco Bay (covering Falmouth, Freeport, Yarmouth, North Yarmouth, Long Island, Chebeague, Cumberland, Gray, New Gloucester and Pownal). ECCHCO is also partnering with the Communities Promoting Health Coalition, a program of the People's Regional Opportunity Program (PROP) to create a community health profile of Cumberland County. This collaboration will also staff a Tobacco Coordinator for the county.
We are excited to report that our geographical region and staff are expanding. You can count on us to help you in your efforts to make your community a healthier place to live, work and play. We have materials and staff resources available to help with most health promotion initiatives, particularly tobacco-free living, physical activity and nutrition promotion, substance abuse prevention, and the prevention of chronic diseases including cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. In addition to the resources available from your local HMP, the Health Promotion Comprehensive Community Health Coalition at the City of Portland has a variety of other health promotion programs including children's oral health, minority health and more. Please contact me at bms@portlandmaine.gov or 874-8634 for more information.
We look forward to hearing from you on how we can help you make your community healthier!
