Longfellow Elementary students explore healthy foods!

Thanks to funding from Hannaford, Longfellow staff, students and parents pulled together to hold a fun healthy food taste-testing event in December.

·  Staff used the funding to purchase fruits and veggies and made a veggie soup.

·  Parents cut bite sized healthy treats of new foods for everyone to try.

·  A few students even brought their favorites from home!

If you would like your schools/classrooms to hold a similar event, please contact:

Got A Minute?  Give It To Your Kid.

The "Got A Minute? Give It To Your Kid" campaign encourages parents to "Get Into Your Kid's Head."  Research shows that spending time with pre-teens helps them make better decisions - even about things like smoking.  We know parenting isn't easy and there never seems to be enough time.  That's why we want to help by providing tips and tools that other parents have used to stay involved in their child's life.

Smoke-Free Housing Gets a Boost

Thanks to a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Smoke-Free Housing Coalition has hired Amy Olfene to work 25 hours a week on this state-wide project to reduce involuntary exposure to secondhand smoke in multi-unit buildings.  Healthy Portland will be working closely with Amy to coordinate outreach to tenants and landlords in Portland.

NO BUTS in Portland stores

Thanks to a Healthy Portland Powerful Youth Mini Grant, Youth Building Alternatives and PROP/Peer Leaders youth are spreading the word to Portland stores about the benefits of the NO BUTS program.  NO BUTS is a program of the Maine Attorney General's office which educates and supports stores in effectively not selling tobacco to minors.  The program is FREE and benefits participating stores by helping them avoid selling to minors and saving them the costs associated with doing so.  The two groups are currently visiting local Portland stores to speak about the benefits of participating in the NO BUTS program and how stores can sign up.

If you're a store owner and would like to know more or want to participate in the NO BUTS program, click here.

If you would like the youth to present NO BUTS at your store, contact:

Rick Fortier

PH: 874-8618

-If you're a community member, remember to thank your local stores who participate in the NO BUTS program.  They are helping to protect our youth and taking responsibility for their sales.
