Greetings!
I originally had a different idea for this month's newsletter, but then I went into my Outlook calendar and noticed some recurring appointments had the wrong times! I realized this is because Daylight Saving Time is three weeks earlier this year, so for the three weeks between when it occurs and when my computer thinks it is, my appointments were wrong. I thought it was important to share some info about Daylight Saving Time. |

Facts About Daylight Saving Time
Why the Date Change in 2007?
On August 8, 2005, President Bush signed the Energy Policy Act of 2005. This Act changed the time change dates for Daylight Saving Time in the U.S. Beginning this year, DST will begin on the second Sunday in March (that's THIS SUNDAY, March 11th) and end the first Sunday in November (November 4th).
What time does the clock officially change?
In the U.S., clocks change at 2:00 a.m. local time. In spring, clocks spring forward from 1:59 a.m. to 3:00 a.m.; in fall, clocks fall back from 1:59 a.m. to 1:00 a.m.
2:00 a.m. was originally chosen as the changeover time because it was practical and minimized disruption. Most people were at home and this was the time when the fewest trains were running.
Do all US areas change their clocks?
No. Daylight Saving Time is NOT observed in Arizona, Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, or the Virgin Islands. So depending on the time of year, the time difference between these areas and other US areas is different.

Issues Related to 2007 Time Change
Since older computers don't know the law was enacted and the time is changing on March 11th instead of in April, your computer will not automatically update unless you're running the latest operating system or you have downloaded a service pack. What about Blackberries, cell phones, TIVO and other gadgets? CBS News offers some info on what's affected and what's not, and tips on what you need to do.

Test Your Smoke Alarms!
Having a smoke alarm won't help you if it doesn't work! Many fire departments recommend using Daylight Saving Time as a reminder to check the batteries in your smoke detectors. (I know my smoke detector works since it seems to go off every time I use my broiler). If they run on electricity you can test them; this goes for carbon monoxide detectors as well. | |
