Local Bird News
HY male rthu
Thanks to all who came out for our hummingbird banding event at our Buford store on September 8th! Although we didn't band quite as many hummers as we usually do at this location, we did have a nice crowd and eleven lucky kids got to release birds! We enjoyed "talkin' hummers" with everyone and Owlbert, our favorite Great Horned Owl, was awesome as usual!

Ruby-throat numbers should remain pretty high for another week or two, but don't take down that feeder! You can still see migrating Ruby-throats for another month, and we have had three western hummingbirds (all Rufous) already reported! Visit the new Georgia Hummers Facebook page
to see what's happening with winter hummingbirds.

Female Rose Breasted Grosbeak

Watch your yard for migrating Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Indigo Buntings, Baltimore Orioles and more. Fall is the best time to try a fruit feeder (load with red grapes for the most success). You never know what might show up this time of year!

If you don't get the chance to come out for the Bird 'N Butterfly-a-Thon this weekend, be sure to take advantage of the many FREE field trips offered by Atlanta Audubon!

for a complete list of field trips in our area. This is a great time of year to get out and go birding. You'll be surprised at what you can see around the Atlanta area! Really, you should go!!!

Hi Birdwatchers!

Summer tanager
Summer Tanager
Fall is in the air. Cool mornings and warm, sunny afternoons equal the perfect opportunity to spend time outdoors. Add lots of birds and the day is outstanding! September and October are some of the best months for birding in Georgia. Hundreds of thousands of migrating warblers, orioles, tanagers, thrushes and much more are passing through each night. Grab your binoculars and favorite field guide and head out to one of our many local birding hotspots. And don't forget butterflies! Late summer and early autumn are perfect for butterfly watching, also! Monarchs and Clouded Sulphurs are migrating, several swallowtails species are plentiful and tiny skippers are busy patrolling their favorite flowers.

If you are free this weekend, September 22nd - 23rd, plan to attend The Bird 'N Butterfly-a-thon at Leone Hall Price Park in Kennesaw. This is a great opportunity for people of all ages and skill levels to learn about birds and butterflies! During the weekend, Audubon volunteers and Master Birders will be available to lead walks through the park for beginning birders or anyone who wants to learn more. Binoculars, bird and butterfly guides will also be available to borrow. The Bird Watcher himself, Richard Cole, along with some of our knowledgeable employees and customers will be attending a walk on Sunday, September 23rd, at 8:30 am, led by photographer and butterfly expert Luke Theodorou. Bring your kids and your camera - prizes will be given away for most species seen, best photos, most funds raised, etc! Rookies are welcome!!! Visit the Friends of Price Park website to register or get more information! We hope to see you there!
