What's Bugging You?
Wasp on feeder

We love feeding and attracting hummingbirds, but unfortunately lots of pesky critters are attracted to nectar also.

Ants are easy to remedy. Ant traps will be your new best friend! Just hang one above any hummingbird feeder and fill it with water. Ants won't cross the "moat."  Simple, cheap and easy. As an added bonus, songbirds love to drink out of them - especially Goldfinches!

Bees, wasps and yellow jackets can be much harder to deter. Try some of the options below:

Saucer-type feeders are better than gravity-fed bottle feeders since they do not leak or drip. Just make sure not to spill or slosh nectar when hanging up the feeder.

Multiple feeders will not only attract more hummingbirds, it will give them a better chance at finding one that is free of bees. You may also try using a feeder that does not have yellow flowers, as bees are more attracted to yellow.

Hornets and yellow jackets are mostly carnivorous, and can often be lured away to a small piece of meat, preferably in a yellow plastic dish with some nectar. Move it a few feet away from feeders daily.

Wasp traps are a good solution also. We carry a decorative wasp trap (pictured above) that works quite well.

Bee guards and nectar tips can help, but hummingbirds do not always like them. Give your birds a few choices and see what works best.

Hi Birdwatchers!

2012 Duck Stamp The Duck Stamp promotion is back by popular demand! Bird Watcher customers can once again take 10% off every purchase (including SEED and SALE items) now through December 31, 2012 simply by presenting this year's Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp, or "Duck Stamp" for short. What's a Duck Stamp, you ask? The Duck Stamp is produced by the U.S. Postal Service for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It was originally created in 1934 as the federal license required for hunting migratory waterfowl, but these Duck Stamps have a much larger purpose today. A whopping 98% of the purchase price of each Duck Stamp goes directly towards purchase or lease of land for the National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) System. Acquisition of this land not only benefits ducks and geese, but all kinds of other birds and wildlife. For years, hunters and stamp collectors have been the only people contributing to this wonderful program, but bird watchers get a huge benefit as well and it's time we step up! So many great places to bird are possible in large part because of the Duck Stamp! Even if you haven't visited a NWR, many of our backyard birds like Indigo Buntings, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Scarlet Tanagers and even Ruby-throated Hummingbirds use these refuges as critical migration stop-overs.

You can purchase a Duck Stamp at your local post office, or better yet, order one from the Georgia Ornithological Society and it will come in a handy keychain holder for only two dollars more. Click Here to find out how to get your Duck Stamp from GOS today, and start saving!
