Hi Birdwatchers!
We have really had a great week watching flocks of Cedar Waxwings. It seems like they are everywhere this winter - at home, at the office, and even in the parking lots of several of our stores, feasting on berries. Some of our customers at the Buford store have seen them in the cedar trees just outside the front windows - what a treat to see them so close! The trick to spotting waxwings is to watch for small to medium-sized flocks flying over, and listen for their high-pitched whistles. Waxwings love berries of all kinds, along with other fruits, flower buds and insects.
We also have goldfinches galore, and apparently so do many of you, judging from all the feedback we've gotten lately! American Goldfinch flocks are fun to watch as they clamor for the best perches at feeding stations, often pecking at their flock-mates if they get too close. Goldfinches are quite acrobatic, and will frequently hang upside-down or land on top of each other to better reach their favorite Niger seed or Sunflower Meats. Male Goldfinches are starting to change into their bright yellow summer plumage, but they might look a little funny until their molt is complete later this spring.
