The Great Backyard Bird Count
took place over the weekend and once again Georgia was in the top ten for most checklists submitted and also for most species seen! Marietta and Roswell ranked second and third, respectively, in the number of checklists submitted by locality. We don't doubt many of our customers had something to do with that!!!

The GBBC shows trends in populations...has this been a busy year in the southeast for American Goldfinches? Will we see as many Pine Siskins or Purple Finches as we did last year? Are others seeing more Juncos? Fewer blackbirds?

Participants have until March 5th to send in count data so visit the site often to see the latest stats! You can find out what the top ten bird species seen in the metro area were, learn how many checklists were sent in from your city or town, or just explore!

It's time again for the
Youth Birding
Competition!!!
This 24-hour event involves teams of kids from K - 12th grade representing schools, scout troops, 4-H clubs, science clubs, etc. competing with each other to count as many species of birds as they can in Georgia. They start Friday evening, April 27th, finding owls and other nocturnal species, will bird throughout Saturday, and then attend an Awards Banquet and Live Animal Show at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center at 5 p.m. Teams can bird at the Wildlife Center or travel the state; just so long as they get to the finish line by 5 p.m. Saturday with their bird checklist!

For more information, visit the Georgia DNR website

If you have or know a teen interested in birding and nature, consider Camp T.A.L.O.N.!
This five day summer camp on the Georgia coast involves some classroom instruction and lots of birding opportunities! Two scholarships are available.  Visit the GOS website for more info!

Hi BirdWatchers!

Bluebird female
This Groundhog Day our local expert, General Beauregard Lee, predicted an early spring. Our birds seem to agree with the General...there's lots of singing and pair bonding going on! Cardinals and House Finches are feeding each other, the Brown Thrasher and Northern Mockingbird have been belting out their songs every morning and our Eastern Bluebirds have been checking out all of the nest boxes in the yard.

Perhaps no other birds besides Bluebirds get people so excited about the nesting season. If you want to attract a pair to your yard this spring, NOW is the time to get ready!  The perfect location for a Bluebird box is on a 4 - 6' pole or post, on an open, grassy lawn, meadow or pasture. Try to locate the box away from trees, shrubs and especially busy birdfeeding stations. The safest Bluebird boxes are properly baffled from snakes, squirrels and raccoons. We recommend a metal portal to prevent squirrels and woodpeckers from enlarging the entrance hole. Starlings and Brown-headed Cowbirds can become a problem if the entrance hole is greater than 1.5".

After you get your bird houses set up, you can entice them to stay by offering some of their favorite treats! Live mealworms are their absolute favorite. Place them in a Bluebird feeder that is visible from their house. Mealworms are full of juicy protein and nutrition and they can't resist them! If the idea of live Mealworms is disagreeable to you, try Freeze Dried Mealworms, Suet Kibbles, Suet Pearls,
Bluebird Nuggets or even Sunflower Meats, which are all enjoyed by Bluebirds too!

Remember, several other native species use Bluebird boxes, like Chickadees, Titmice, Nuthatches and Wrens, and we like to encourage them also. Having multiple houses ensures everyone has a nice, safe place to raise their young! Most of these other species are not quite as picky as Bluebirds, and will nest in a more wooded location.

Visit us soon and let us help you pick up the perfect nest box setup for your yard! We also have some great books on attracting Bluebirds and monitoring their nest boxes.
