Sandhill crane
Look up!  What's that sound?
Sandhill Cranes!  Flocks are being spotted in our area, mainly on the west side of town as they migrate from Canada and the Great Lakes region to winter in Florida.  Watch carefully, and you may be really lucky and spot a Whooping Crane
or two mixed in with the flock!

A male Orange-crowned Warbler banded by Julia Elliott has returned to the same Lawrenceville backyard for the third year in a row!  He loves suet, mealworms and even the hummingbird nectar!  Ruby-crowned Kinglets and Yellow-rumped Warblers are also frequent suet visitors, so make sure you've got plenty!

Have you ever done a Christmas Bird Count?
CBCs are a great way to help birds just by going birding!
to get a schedule of CBCs in Georgia.  Don't worry if you are not an expert, you will be placed on a team with experienced birders.  It's great fun and a nice distraction from all the holiday craziness!  And you may not even need to leave your yard, if you happen to live in a "count circle" you can participate simply by watching and counting the birds you see in your yard or neighborhood!  The Atlanta CBC is actually held in the Marietta/Kennesaw/Acworth area, west of I-75 on Sunday, December 18th. Contact the Atlanta area compiler and make your birds count!

Hi Birdwatchers!

Tufted titmouse
We know everyone has a lot going on this time of year - all the Christmas shopping, the traveling, the cookie baking and so on.  But don't forget about your birds!  With the colder weather and dwindling natural food options, birds are flocking back to our feeders this month!  We are seeing Cardinals, plenty of Goldfinches, and tons of Chickadees and Titmice again, along with many wintering sparrows and juncos.  We were treated to a glimpse of a Brown Creeper on the suet feeder the other day, and our Bluebirds have returned to their favorite mealworm feeder.

Do you still have your hummingbird feeder up?  This is turning out to be a banner year for Rufous and other wintering hummingbirds!  Julia and Karen have gotten many reports, including a few return birds banded in past years.  So much valuable information is learned by banding and documenting wintering hummingbirds.  Please call the GA Hummer Hotline at 770-784-1636 to report any hummingbird between now and March 1st! To see photos of some of the birds banded this year, be sure to visit our Facebook page!

Still have lots of Christmas shopping to do?  We have tons of great gift ideas (many made in the USA), no crowds, easy parking, helpful advice - why shop anywhere else??  And stock up on some goodies for your birds while you're here!
