Are You a Birder or Bird Watcher???

People who enjoy birds come in all shapes, sizes, abilities, and levels of participation.  While some people use these two terms interchangeably, there are many that consider a "birder" to be a more active participant in the sport of "birding", while a "bird watcher" more passively enjoys the hobby by perhaps feeding backyard birds and occasionally going on a field trip.

Do You
eBird???

There is a fairly new phenomenon in birding called eBird that has revolutionized how birders (and bird watchers!) can record and access data from all over the world.  eBird is a database that is becoming the future of conservation since we can now chart species abundance and decline in real time.  Everyone's observations are part of a great big puzzle!  eBird is a great tool for the casual backyard birder or the hard-core lister.

Hi Birdwatchers!

Are you a "lister"?  Many birders are notorious for making lists of birds they see and hear, such as yard lists, county lists, state lists, year lists, trip lists or  even bathroom lists!  Some only make lists a few times a year for special events like Christmas Bird Counts or Cornell's Great Backyard Bird Count, while a few very dedicated birders make lists almost daily!  There are about 10,000 bird species in the world, about 1000 bird species in North America, and about 400 species in Georgia.  How many have YOU seen?

The reason for the listing theme in this newsletter is our excitement about an upcoming movie called The Big Year.  What's a "big year", you ask?  We'll let John Cleese answer that question...
The Big Year- Audubon Clip
This film stars the hilarious trio of Steve Martin, Owen Wilson and Jack Black, and is based on the true story of three competitive birders trying to break the North American Big Year record.  How will the movie represent birders?  Will it poke fun at us?  Use classic stereotypes?  It should be interesting to see how we are depicted.  It looks like great fun and will feature many birding hotspots and birds.  It opens October 14th and we can't wait!

Here is another teaser clip from the movie:
