Local Bird News
Male hummer in the hand
Thanks to everyone who came out to the hummingbird banding event at the beautiful Smith-Gilbert Gardens in Kennesaw on August 27th.  Fifteen hummingbirds were banded that day and a great time was had by all!  Ruby-throated Hummingbirds
will continue in good numbers through the end of September, but please leave your feeders up for the late stragglers through October.  You can really help them out on their journey south!

Fall migration is picking up!  We have started to see a few migrants like Baltimore Oriole,
Red-eyed Vireo and Blue-gray Gnatcatcher!
What are you seeing???  We'd love to hear your reports and see your photos on our
Facebook page!!!

Interested in other types of bird banding?  Our friend, Charlie Muise, who is the coordinator for the Georgia IBA (Important Bird Area) Program welcomes visitors to his banding stations at Joe Kurtz WMA and Panola Mountain State Park.  Charlie catches and bands a wide variety of songbirds and even the occasional hawk or falcon.

Hi Birdwatchers!

2011 Duck Stamp

Have you ever heard of a Duck Stamp?  The

Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp, or "Duck Stamp" for short, is produced by the U.S. Postal Service for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  It was originally created in 1934 as the federal license required for hunting migratory waterfowl, but these Duck Stamps have a much larger purpose today. $14.70 of each purchase of a $15 Duck Stamp goes directly towards purchase or lease of land for the National Wildlife Refuge System (NWR).  Acquisition of this land not only benefits ducks and geese, but all kinds of other birds and wildlife. For years hunters and stamp collectors have been the only people contributing to this wonderful program, but bird watchers get a huge benefit as well and it's time we step up!  Have you ever spotted a Red-cockaded Woodpecker or a Bachman's Sparrow at the Piedmont NWR?  A Painted Bunting or Purple Gallinule at the Altamaha?  Georgia has many wonderful places to bird in large part because of the Duck Stamp!  Even if you haven't visited a NWR, many of our backyard birds like Indigo Buntings, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and Gray Catbirds use these refuges as critical migration stop-overs.

You can purchase a Duck Stamp at your local post office, or better yet, order one from the Georgia Ornithological Society and it will come in a handy keychain holder for only two dollars more! Click Here to find out how to get your Duck Stamp from GOS today!
