Hi Birdwatchers!
 | Young male Ruby-throated Hummingbird photo by Jane Walker
|
We had a really great banding event this past Saturday, and a big THANK YOU goes out to everyone who attended! Banders Karen Theodorou and Julia Elliott caught and banded 19 Ruby- throats. Owlbert was also a big hit with the crowd! Be sure to check out our Bird Watcher Facebook page and all of the photos, and feel free to post your own! The staff both inside and outside the store were busy answering questions all day, but one subject seemed to dominate - bugs!!! It has been a dry summer and we always feel that makes it worse, but so many of you asked what to do about the bees and wasps at your hummingbird feeders. One solution is to use bee-proof feeders. These are the saucer shaped variety, essentially a bowl with a lid, and this keeps the nectar out of reach of the bees! Ants are always an issue, but there is a simple solution for that as well. Hang an ant trap filled with water right over your hummingbird feeder! Not only will this keep the ants away, but it will also be a place for many of your other songbirds to drink and even bathe! Don't forget, our sale runs through this weekend so it's a perfect time to get a different style of feeder to help with your problem or to pick up an ant trap or two, all at 20% off! |

Don't Take Down Those Feeders!!!
| |
Labor Day weekend is fast approaching, and with it will come the question, "When should I take my hummingbird feeder down?" We say - DON'T!!! Despite what you may have heard or even read, leaving feeders up will not keep hummingbirds from migrating. The truth is that these feisty little birds will migrate when the time is right, regardless of food availability. Many flowering plants will continue to bloom until the first hard frost, so there is already still food around for hummingbirds long after the majority have left for their wintering grounds. Leaving a feeder up year round is also a great way to attract a wintering hummingbird! For more information about wintering hummingbirds in Georgia, Click Here!
