What is Banding?

During our banding events, hummingbirds will be carefully weighed, measured and checked for health, and a tiny, numbered aluminum band will be placed on the bird's leg before it is released. Banding is how scientists gain valuable information such as migratory patterns, habitat needs, breeding information, age and longevity in order to ensure the conservation of future populations. Banding events are a great way for the public to see hummingbirds up close and learn how to help them. All of the data collected is sent to the Bird Banding Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland.
**Nectar Recipe** We get asked this question a lot! The proper way to make hummingbird nectar at home is to mix one part sugar with four parts water. For instance, you would add 1/4 cup of sugar to 1 cup of water to make a cup of nectar. Boiling is really not necessary, and be sure to change your nectar and rinse the feeder out at least twice a week!

Not an early riser? More of a night owl? If getting up in time to catch the hummingbird banding at 8 am is not your thing, sleep in and visit the Buford Bird Watcher Supply from 10 am - 12 pm on Saturday the 20th to see Owlbert and his handler Debbie Tennyson, of Wild Things Environmental Education. Owlbert is a Great Horned Owl that has lost one eye from injury and now is a wildlife ambassador, teaching kids of all ages about our largest and most magnificent owl species in Georgia. We are so happy to have Owlbert visiting us again!
