Local Bird News
Purple Martin
Even though we're in the dog days of summer, fall migration has begun for many bird species.  Purple Martins (above),
Barn Swallows, Cliff Swallows and
N. Rough-winged Swallows are on the move! You may see large flocks at some of their migration staging sites as they gather to roost for the night.
Common nighthawk

Common Nighthawk
migration will also be taking place in the next few weeks. Watch for them streaming overhead at dusk, especially in heavily lighted parking lots and ball fields.

Cerulean
and
Worm-eating Warblers, Lousiana Waterthrushes, Orchard Orioles, and Eastern Kingbirds
are other early migrants you could find at local birding spots.

Hi Birdwatchers!

Sunflowers

Since many of you have asked, "What is up with birdseed prices lately?" We thought we'd give you an update.

As you may have heard in the news, many more farmers are growing corn for ethanol (instead of sunflower and other food crops) because they receive tax credits from the government.  Last year's sunflower crop was very small, and the 2011 harvest will likely be delayed because of this spring's heavy rains in the Midwest. These factors, coupled with continued strong demand for sunflower oil, have pushed market prices up 40% since this January.  The surge in prices is bad enough, but the dwindling supply is now creating shortages of sunflower products.  We were out of our 50lb Black Oil Sunflower for nearly a month, but we are pleased to announce that all of our stores currently have 50lb sunflower in stock!!!  You may remember that a similar shortage happened back in 2008-2009, causing prices to soar for a few months, and then they came back down. We are hopeful the same thing will happen this time.

Bird Watcher Supply is committed to keeping the price of our products as low as possible, while not sacrificing product quality.  Our Black Oil Sunflower is double cleaned to remove over 99% of the stems and dirt.  More importantly, our seed contains more of the nutritious oil the birds want and need.  You may find seed a little cheaper somewhere else, but we can guarantee it won't be the same quality!

New Lower Price!!!

Cole's Dried Mealworms
Dried Mealworms are a terrific, high-protein treat that can be served year round!  Use in a Bluebird Feeder or just mix in with your regular birdseed.  All songbirds love them!

Due to a shift in the marketplace, we are now able to get a much lower price on this product, and we are passing the savings on to you!!!

Our regular bag of Cole's Dried Mealworms is now priced at $5.99, and our large bag is $12.99.  This is almost a 50% savings!  And it's not a sale, this is our new every day price!
