Whooping cranes
Karen Theodorou, manager of our Buford store, and her son Luke were out looking for birds and butterflies in one of North Georgia's WMAs (Wildlife Management Areas) last week and were treated to a very rare sighting!  Two
 Whooping Cranes
flew over at a low altitude and circled the marsh several times before heading north. Whooping Cranes are endangered, with only a few hundred left in the wild. These two cranes were actually part of a reintroduction project by the USFWS to establish an eastern migratory population that breeds in Wisconsin and winters in Florida.  The cranes were banded and one was fitted with a transmitter wire so they can be tracked on their long journey.

Hi Birdwatchers!

Wow, we have really sprung into spring!  The
Winter goldfinch
Winter plumage (female)
trees are absolutely stunning this year, and some of our birds are also changing into their prettier breeding plumage.  American Goldfinches are probably the most noticeable since we get flocks of them at our feeders this time of year.  Some are still olive green, while a few have already molted into a vibrant lemon yellow!  Most are somewhere in between, wearing splotches of bright yellow.  Goldfinch numbers peak in the spring because most of the birds we see are actually migrating, and are filling up at our feeders while making their way north. Georgia is at the very southern tip of their breeding range; it is very rare to have Goldfinches breeding south of the Macon area.  They are also late nesters, not usually starting until early July when they can find thistle down to use in nestbuilding.

Summer goldfinch
Summer plumage (male)
You should see good numbers of Goldfinches through the end of April, and then these numbers will start to decline as migration ends.  But if you have the right habitat, you may certainly see smaller flocks throughout the summer months.  Also, keep an eye out for Pine Siskins mixed in with the Goldfinches this spring.  Siskins are a close cousin and also love Niger and Sunflower Seed!  Cole's Finch Friends is a blend of Niger, Sunflower Meats and Canary Seed - all of their favorites in one bag!
