Hi Birdwatchers!
Wow, we have really sprung into spring! The
 | | Winter plumage (female) | trees are absolutely stunning this year, and some of our birds are also changing into their prettier breeding plumage. American Goldfinches are probably the most noticeable since we get flocks of them at our feeders this time of year. Some are still olive green, while a few have already molted into a vibrant lemon yellow! Most are somewhere in between, wearing splotches of bright yellow. Goldfinch numbers peak in the spring because most of the birds we see are actually migrating, and are filling up at our feeders while making their way north. Georgia is at the very southern tip of their breeding range; it is very rare to have Goldfinches breeding south of the Macon area. They are also late nesters, not usually starting until early July when they can find thistle down to use in nestbuilding.
 | Summer plumage (male)
| You should see good numbers of Goldfinches through the end of April, and then these numbers will start to decline as migration ends. But if you have the right habitat, you may certainly see smaller flocks throughout the summer months. Also, keep an eye out for Pine Siskins mixed in with the Goldfinches this spring. Siskins are a close cousin and also love Niger and Sunflower Seed! Cole's Finch Friends is a blend of Niger, Sunflower Meats and Canary Seed - all of their favorites in one bag!
