Hummingbirds aren't the only ones heading back soon - early spring migrants like Purple Martins are making the trip from their wintering grounds in Brazil. That's a long haul! They will be followed shortly by Northern Rough-winged Swallows, Tree Swallows and Barn Swallows. You might spot these birds hawking insects over local lakes and ponds. N. Rough-wings are often seen hanging around parking lots and industrial buildings. In the east, Purple Martins are the only species completely dependent upon humans to provide their nest boxes or gourds....so if you have a wide field, pasture or are on a lake, consider becoming a Purple Martin landlord. These beautiful, social birds need your help! Upcoming Events
