Winter bird feeding can be exciting! New visitors like Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Orange-crowned Warblers, Pine SiskinsPurple Finches and Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers may show up.  You may catch a glimpse of a Fox Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, Junco or Hermit Thrush scratching around under your feeders.  Snowy days can provide a great excuse to stay home, sit back with some hot chocolate and watch the action in the backyard!

Since You Asked...

Many of you have wondered how to keep hummingbird feeders from freezing in the winter, especially after our most recent newsletter!  It is really quite simple!  First of all, nectar will not freeze until temperatures are in the mid 20s due to the high sugar concentration.  But after that, you can use a clamp-on spotlight with a 100 watt outdoor flood lamp placed 12 to 18 inches from the feeder.  This will prevent freezing to temperatures well below zero!

Wintering hummingbirds often use this setup as a warming area by just perching on the feeder in the warmth of the flood lamp even when they are not feeding at the feeder!

Due to the recent weather event, it is unlikely that we will be open today.

"Wow!  Our birds are really eating a lot!"

Pine siskins
  Pine Siskins eating Niger seed
We hear this statement quite often during the winter months!  Insects, nuts and seeds are not as plentiful now and cold, hungry birds are flocking to feeders.  If you provide favorite seeds such as Black Oil Sunflower, Sunflower Meats, Niger and White Proso Millet, along with extra proteins such as nuts, suet and mealworms, it may seem like every bird in the neighborhood is at your bird feeding station!

Here are a few things you can do to help out winter birds:

* Put out extra feeders.  Having more perches will allow larger flocks to feed together.  This is a good time to get your thistle feeder back out if you packed it away during the summer/fall months.

* Use rain guards or hanging baffles over feeders to keep them dry on rainy or snowy days.

* Spread White Proso Millet on the ground.  Many of our winter birds such as juncos and sparrows love millet!

* Serve up some mealworms - they are not just for summer feeding!  Mealworms, both live and freeze-dried, are great high-protein snacks.  You can also mix Suet Pearls and Suet Kibbles in with your seed for extra protein.

* Provide winter roosting boxes or roosting pockets for cold nights.  Bluebird houses will work also!

How many birds???

Just for fun, guess how many siskins and goldfinches are in this picture!  The answer will be in the next newsletter!!!
