Rufous hummingbird
We have another
Rufous Hummingbird
that is also back for her fourth winter in a row - this one is in the yard of Bird Watcher employee
 Karen Theodorou.
She returned on October 22nd, right on schedule!  Last year she showed up on October 20th.  The timing of these tiny birds never ceases to amaze us!

Great-horned owl

Great-horned Owls
and Barred Owls have been calling lately. Great-horned Owls nest in December, so they are setting up territories now. They tend to reuse the nests of other species of owls, hawks and even squirrels.

Swamp sparrow

If you are a glutton for punishment and would like to learn more about sparrow identification, sign up for the Atlanta Audubon Society's Sparrow Workshop!  There is a fee to participate in this class.
Visit
Atlanta Audubon
for more information.

Atlanta Audubon is also hosting a few free field trips in November for birdwatchers of all skill levels, including one to be held November 20th at Cochran Shoals geared especially for kids and families!  Extra binoculars will be available for those that do not have a pair.

Hi Birdwatchers!

Red Breasted Nuthatch w/peanutWill this winter be a birdy one? Only time will tell, but signs are pointing to YES!  Birdwatchers are reporting high numbers of American Goldfinches, Ruby and Golden-crowned Kinglets and various sparrows, including many Lincoln's Sparrows, when usually only a few are reported each year. Scientists that predict irruptive behavior in birds believe that Red-
breasted Nuthatches and Pine Siskins may also show up in good numbers this winter. Your feeders could be very busy!

Wintering ducks are also arriving from northern breeding grounds.  Watch your local ponds for Hooded Mergansers, Wood Ducks and Ring-necked Ducks. You might even see a tiny Pied-billed Grebe
