Raptors can be challenging to identify to birdwatchers of all skill levels.  If you would like to learn how to better identify them, we recommend

Did You Know?

On March 13, 2000, a reputed member of the Genovese crime family, Anthony "Tough Tony" Federici, was arrested for twice firing a 20-gauge shotgun from the roof of his Queens, New York, restaurant.

A mob hit?

No.  Mr. Federici was trying to protect his champion racing pigeons, kept on the restaurant's roof, from a pair of circling hawks.  He was released after paying a $90 fine for hunting within the city limits.
Hi Birdwatchers!

In our last newsletter, we talked about the nocturnal migration of many of our songbirds.  But there are some species that migrate diurnally, or during the day. Raptors are one group that do this.  Vultures, ospreys,  eagles, falcons and  hawks  are on the move this month.  Watch for them catching  thermals on warm afternoons.

In Georgia, we are lucky to have several species of raptors.  Red-shouldered  and Cooper's Hawks are commonly found in most neighborhoods.  Red-tailed Hawks are easily spotted along highways and in fields and pastures.  Broad-winged Hawks are not quite as common, but you might be lucky and see them during the summer months.  They leave to winter in South America in September, usually flying in impressive flocks.  It is breathtaking to witness a few hundred Broadwings silently soaring overhead!  During the winter months, Northern Harriers can be found  hunting over large fields and marshes.

Raptors play an important role in our ecosystem, helping to keep rodent populations in check. They are also species indicators, which means their presence is a sign of a healthy environment.
