Hi Birdwatchers!
Fall migration is in full swing! Now is a great time to see some of
those birds you've only seen in books. Vireos, warblers, tanagers,
flycatchers, orioles and much more are passing overhead nightly as they
migrate southwards. Birds migrate at night due to more favorable
weather conditions and fewer predators, and use the moon, stars and the
earth's magnetic field to guide them. These birds land at stopover points close to dawn to rest and refuel, giving bird watchers great
opportunities to see them. Some of these places are actually called
migrant traps, and locally include Kennesaw Mountain and some sites along
river corridors, such as the Cochran Shoals Unit of the Chattahoochee River
National Recreation Area. Centennial Olympic Park is turning out to be
another great site, being a green oasis in the middle of downtown
Atlanta. Look for birds in the trees and shrubs near the water
features.
