Birds on the Move
Migration varies nightly depending on weather fronts and visibility.  One way to determine migration activity is to check the
Nexrad radar
after about 10pm.  Bet you didn't know that large groups of birds show up on radar!!!

Another cool website is Badbirdz-Reloaded.
They do a great job of interpreting and reporting radar migration in the east.

If you live in a quiet area, away from vehicle noise, you may be able to go outside and hear migrants passing overhead as they make call notes (soft chips, chirrs and buzzes).  It's really neat!

If you hear a lot of call notes and the radar looks good, grab your field guide and binoculars and go birding early in the morning!   For a list of free local field trips, visit
Atlanta Audubon's
website!

Did You Know?

Bird migration isn't simply about escaping the cold.  Come fall, while other species are heading down the slopes of the Rockies and Sierras, the
Blue Grouse
is heading up.  The lure?  Conifer needles, which it feasts on during the winter.

Hi Birdwatchers!

Fall migration is in full swing!  Now is a great time to see some of those birds you've only seen in books. Vireos, warblers, tanagers, flycatchers, orioles and much more are passing overhead nightly as they migrate southwards.  Birds migrate at night due to more favorable weather conditions and fewer predators, and use the moon, stars and the earth's magnetic field to guide them.  These birds land at stopover points close to dawn to rest and refuel, giving bird watchers great opportunities to see them.  Some of these places are actually called migrant traps, and locally include Kennesaw Mountain and some sites along river corridors, such as the Cochran Shoals Unit of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation AreaCentennial Olympic Park is turning out to be another great site, being a green oasis in the middle of downtown Atlanta.  Look for birds in the trees and shrubs near the water features.
