Local Bird News
| | We've had some exciting news from two of our BWS customers, Myra Smith and
Sandy Jo Ray. These two neighbors are seeing a pair of Painted
Buntings in their yards in Buford! Sandy Jo originally reported the
male back in May. He spent over 3 weeks in her yard and is now being
seen with his mate in Myra's yard. We are keeping our fingers crossed
that they spot some fledgling Painted Buntings soon! If so, these
would be the northernmost breeding pair documented in Georgia! Painted
Buntings rarely breed above the fall line from Macon to Augusta.
Ruby-throated Hummingbird numbers have not peaked yet, but they are definitely picking up! This past week our staff banders visited several sites and banded good numbers of Ruby-throats. Activity at feeders will continue to increase through August and into September before tapering off in mid to late October.

Hi Birdwatchers!
It's the time of year for ugly cardinals. Normally Northern Cardinals, or
"redbirds" as they are often called, are among the most beautiful birds
at our feeders. Males are cherry red, with a striking crest, and black
feathers around a bright orange bill. Females are a more subtle taupe
with hints of red in the wings, tail and crest. In late summer and
early fall, cardinals molt their older worn feathers and replace them
with strong, healthy newer ones better for flying, waterproofing and
regulating body temperature. In most birds, molt is a gradual process
in which a few feathers are replaced at a time. But sometimes molt can
be drastic, often due to mites or other parasites. We see this in
cardinals, jays and some other birds. They can be totally bald! We
get many calls from concerned customers that "their" cardinals are sick
or injured. Don't worry!! They will soon complete their molt and be
beautiful once again! |
