Squirrels are also eating more suet this time of year since most nuts and acorns haven't ripened yet, so we use Cole's Hot Meats Suet to keep them away.  It works very well and our birds love it!  Hungry flocks of Common Grackles and European Starlings are not as easy to remedy.  Feeders such as the Upside-down Suet Feeder or the Suet Sanctuary by Duncraft can definitely help, but may also limit some other, more desirable birds that are larger or cannot hover and feed easily.
