It's that time of year again when our stores get lots of phone calls from well-meaning folks who have discovered a baby bird on the ground.  Please don't assume that these  very helpless looking youngsters need  to be "saved".
Most fledglings leave the nest before they can fly and can be seen hopping or flying very short distances as their wings gain strength.  Sometimes they may need to be relocated if they wander into the street, or are in danger of being caught by a cat or dog.  In this case, find a low, safe branch nearby, preferably in the shade, where they are out of harms way.  Please resist the urge to try and raise these birds yourself as it is very difficult - not to mention illegal!
