  • Spread the Word to End the Word

The Special Olympics launched a campaign Tuesday to banish the word "retard," a casual insult that derives from an out-of-favor medical term and has long been considered inappropriate.

The goal: make people stop and think about their hurtful and disparaging use of the word "retard."

The campaign is raising the consciousness of society about the dehumanizing and hurtful effects of the R- word and urging people to resolve to stop using it as an insult, casual or intended.

Across the United States, people on college campuses,
    in high school cafeterias
    and workaday offices
    have launched the

The study is run by Dr. Donald Patrick, Director of the Seattle Quality of Life Group, in the Department of Health Services at the University of Washington.

The purpose is to learn how being deaf or hard-of-hearing affects the life of children and youth ages 5-18 years.

    For Parents
If you are a parent or guardian of a deaf or hard-of- hearing youth between the ages of 5-18

    For Youth

The study is funded by the National Center for Deafness and Communication Disorders at the National Institutes of Health.

Keep track of the state government's proposed budget and changes in services

One proposal is the transfer of oversight and management of programs for Birth to Three and Adult Vocational services from each county Developmental Disabilities Program to the State Division of Developmental Disabilities.

For details go to Washington state's official legislative website.

To find your senators' and representative's phone numbers, you may use a searchable online directory or call TOLL-FREE: 1-800-562-6000 & ask for your senators' and/or representative's phone number.

Remember that telephone calls are usually taken by a staff member, not the legislator. Ask to speak with the aide who handles the issue about which you wish to comment.
