Our leadership program might be perfect for you!

The Arc of Whatcom County's Parent Coalition is now accepting applications for the 2008-2009 Local Leadership Development Program.

This is an amazing opportunity to become a better advocate for yourself, a family member, and other people with developmental disabilities.

    Through interactive workshops, you will

    • Develop advocacy, leadership and communication skills
    • Learn about the disability movement
    • Understand current legislation that impacts your family.

We invite you to join us for this training and develop skills that turn your experience into action.

    Economic Stimulus Checks

There are over 116,000 Adults with Disabilities, Seniors and Veterans, in Washington State who have yet to claim their IRS checks.

It is estimated that many of these individuals are living in residential facilities or they are not aware that they are eligible.

Recipients must file a form for 2007 even if they do not usually file taxes.

The deadline is October 15 to file a tax form with the IRS.

    Public Policy Fellowship

    Advocacy training in Washington D.C.

Parents or family members of people with developmental or intellectual disabilities can now apply for an exciting one-year Public Policy Fellowship in Washington D.C.

The individual must have excellent leadership skills and be actively working in some way towards the enhancement of inclusive services and supports for people with disabilities.

The goal of the fellowship, which is sponsored by the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation, is to prepare emerging family advocates for leadership in the area of public policy, both in their home state and nationally.

The application deadline is August 15, 2008.
