2011 Achievements:

New Programs Implemented

Way to Health PLUS: Under the guidance of our cooking faculty, participants plan and create quick, delicious and balanced meals. Due to the totally hands-on format with individual mentoring from our staff, this week-long hands-on cooking workshop has really taken off to become one of our most popular programs.

Healing Diabetes and Hypoglycemia: For decades, participants with diabetes who attended our week-long Way to Health program have reported outstanding benefits, with many able to go off their diabetes medication by the week's end, and to stay off the medication after returning home. In 2011, we implemented our new extended weekend program, Healing Diabetes and Hypoglycemia, which focuses specifically on helping heal blood sugar issues.

Women's Retreat: This new week-long course has received rave reviews from participants. Facilitated by six outstanding workshop leaders, topics included: healing health issues specific to women, easing menopause symptoms, cooking for greater vitality, movement and creativity, empowerment, and more. Two Women's Retreats are scheduled for 2012.

New Online Macrobiotic Courses Under Development

Our goal has always been to share our teachings on healthy eating and living with as wide an audience as possible, and for many individuals unable to attend the Kushi Institute, our new online courses can provide the key to a new lease on health.

Designed with a focus on enabling individuals to learn about healthy macrobiotic cooking and lifestyle practices in the comfort of their home, the curriculum includes basic macrobiotic cooking instruction and lectures, some of which will be in video format featuring Kushi Institute faculty.

The development of the online program was initiated this year, and we hope to have the first segments online by mid 2012.

Preliminary Work on New Scientific Research Study

Though there are many individuals who attest to their recovery from cancer after implementing a well-designed macrobiotic plan, we have continual requests for research that can help bring understanding to the mechanisms by which macrobiotics helps support recovery.

We are pleased to announce that this year Kushi Institute has made strides in developing the first scientific research study regarding the effect of macrobiotics on the genes that produce melanoma and breast cancer. To conduct this study, Kushi Institute established a partnership with the University of California at Riverside, Hippocrates Institute, and the Dr.Yu Foundation. The study is in its last preparatory stage awaiting final approval by an independent review board before it can receive actual participants. We anticipate testing to begin this coming year and are excited about this groundbreaking work.

Continuing and Advancing Our Good Work

Development and implementation of new programs, online courses, and much needed, important research studies comes at a cost. The preparatory work for our upcoming scientific research study thus far has cost over $10,000 in Kushi Institute support alone thus far, and we expect outlays of at least $10,000 more in the next six months.

Our online course development has so far exceeded $50,000.
