JEL is pleased to present a monthly book discussion! The group is informal and friendly, and new participants are always welcome.
This month the group will meet on Monday, October 1st at 6:30 p.m. to discuss The Inn at Lake Devine by Elinor Lipman:
"It's 1962 and all across America barriers are collapsing. But when Natalie Marx's mother inquires about summer accommodations in Vermont, she gets the following reply: The Inn at Lake Devine is a family-owned resort, which has been in continuous operation since 1922. Our guests who feel most comfortable here, and return year after year, are Gentiles. For twelve-year-old Natalie, who has a stubborn sense of justice, the words are not a rebuff but an infuriating, irresistible challenge.
As Natalie tries to enter the world that has excluded her--and succeeds through the sheerest of accidents--The Inn at Lake Devine becomes a delightful and provocative romantic comedy full of sparkling social mischief."
Library staff will obtain copies of each title for participants, one month before the discussion date. Please ask at the Information Desk to reserve your copy of next month's title!

Library eBooks!

Library ebooks are available to download for Nook, Kindle, Sony, iPad/iPhone, and other devices! Just visit the Digital Catalog to get started.
Why Can't You Find the eBook You Want From the Library?
Although demand for eBooks is growing, the biggest book publishers are limiting library access to their eBooks. Some publishers cite security concerns while others point out that eBooks, unlike print books, will never need replacing in a library's collection. They fear that library eBook lending cuts into income for both publishers and authors. As library users, it means limited access to some of the current, popular titles we want to read on our new e-readers. Different publishers set limits in different ways. For example, MacMillan and Simon & Schuster have never allowed e-books to be distributed to libraries via OverDrive, and HarperCollins limits each eBook to 26 checkouts, then requires libraries to buy another copy.
As we continue to expand our eBook collection, we hope you understand some of the limitations that are placed on us. The eBook industry continues to evolve and we're optimistic that a workable solution between publishers and libraries will come about.
If you have any questions about downloading an ebook or transferring it to your device, just ask a staff member! Informational brochures for each device are also available at the desk to walk you through the steps. | |

Library Box Office: Protektor
Thursday, October 11th at 6:00 p.m.
"1938, Prague. Emil, a radio reporter, is married to the beautiful Hana, an actress whose new film has catapulted her into fame. As the Nazis come to power, however, Hana's Jewish heritage precipitates her fall from stardom to the bottom of the social ladder. In order to protect her, Emil compromises himself collaborating with the new Nazi-controlled state radio station. But as Emil starts enjoying the attention and respect that had previously evaded him, his fidelity and loyalty towards his wife begin to falter. The assassination of the Third Reich Deputy Protector and a chance encounter on a bicycle bring their lingering marriage to a crisis, possibly sealing Hana's fate."
Winner of 9 Czech Lions (Czech Film Academy Awards).
In Czech with English subtitles. Running time: 102 minutes.
All screenings are held in the Pioppi Room, lower level.
About the Library Box Office: Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commerical theaters by Hollywood blockbusters, and face skyrocketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. JEL subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you. |

Trolley Days with Robert T. McMaster
Thursday, October 25th at 6:30 p.m.
Trolley Days, a historical novel set in Holyoke in the nineteen-teens, is a first novel from Robert T. McMaster. Although set in Western MA, this novel will resonate with folks in the area, as there was a system in Southbridge until 1928 and the author has strong local connections! This book is based on stories he heard about the trolley when he was growing up. The author will talk about his novel and books will be available for signing. Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Jacob Edwards Library. Trolley Days is the story of an unlikely friendship between two boys growing up in Holyoke in its industrial heyday. Jack Bernard is the son of a mill worker who emigrated from Canada, Tom Wellington the son of the mill owner. Jack is shy and socially a bit awkward, Tom self-assured and smooth-talking. But for all their differences, the two boys have much in common. They love fishing, sports, and all manner of youthful tomfoolery. Each has suffered the loss of a sibling, tragedies that have affected both families deeply.
Robert McMaster has lived in Massachusetts all his life and is Professor of Biology at Holyoke Community College. Earlier this summer, he presented the Henry L Ferguson Museum 2012 Smith Vaughan Lecture on a Natural History Subject.
