Why Can't You Find the eBook You Want From the Library?

Although demand for eBooks is growing, the biggest book publishers are limiting library access to their eBooks.

Some publishers cite security concerns while others point out that eBooks, unlike print books, will never need replacing in a library's collection. They fear that library eBook lending cuts into income for both publishers and authors. As library users, it means limited access to some of the current, popular titles we want to read on our new e-readers.

Different publishers set limits in different ways:

-MacMillan Publishing has never allowed e-books to be distributed to libraries via OverDrive.

-Simon & Schuster has never allowed eBooks to be distributed to libraries via OverDrive.

-Hachette no longer offers e-book titles to libraries via OverDrive.

-HarperCollins limits each eBook to 26 checkouts, then requires libraries to buy another copy.

-Random House recently raised its prices for libraries, as much as 300% more. An example: for Eisenhower in War and Peace by Jean Edward Smith the ebook price went from $40 to $120.  For Blessings by Anna Quindlen the ebook price went from $15 to $45.

-Penguin Group no longer offers e-book titles to libraries via OverDrive. Previously purchased Penguin Kindle titles in our OverDrive catalog will no longer be delivered through a WiFi connection from Amazon. These titles will need to be downloaded to your computer first and then transferred using a USB cord.

As we continue to expand our eBook collection, we hope you understand some of the limitations that are placed on us. The eBook industry continues to evolve and we're optimistic that a workable solution between publishers and libraries will come about.

Left and Let Be: Photography by Vivien Goldman
Reception Thursday, August 2nd at 6:30 p.m.

Boston photographer Vivien Goldman presents her exhibit Left and Let Be: Abandoned Structures in North Dakota during the month of August.

"These photographs were taken over a two year period in the area around Rugby, North Dakota. These farms, churches, and schools were abandoned when the owners died or could no longer sustain them. They were simply left and let be. In these quiet and abandoned places, still containing the barest remains of the lives they once held, I hoped to capture some of the beauty that still resides in them in spite of their various stages of decay."

The show will be on view from August 2 to August 31 in the main hall. A reception will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 2nd. All welcome, light refreshments offered by the Friends of Jacob Edwards Library.

"I like photographing the inside of old buildings and the things I find there, often single objects, illuminated briefly, by light from a nearby window. This project was inspired in part by Pablo Nerudas poems, Odes to Common Things, that celebrate the ordinary things of everyday life and carry within them the stories, real or imagined, of the people who used them. The everyday things in these photographs are repositories of history, of objects in the lives of strangers that are made new again by my own presence and my own purposes."

About the Library Box Office: Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commerical theaters by Hollywood blockbusters, and face skyrocketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. JEL subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you.
Notable and Notorious
Thursday, August 16th at 6:30 p.m.

Notable and Notorious Notable and Notorious: Historically Interesting People from The Last Green Valley is a presentation full of interesting facts about several people that lived in 35 towns that comprise The Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor.  The Earliest settlement in The Last Green Valley was Norwich in 1659.  For more than 350 years, people have left their mark on the history of the region - some more so than others.  This program explores the story of several of the Notable and Notorious folks in no particular order.  We hope some you will recognize and some you may not have heard of before.

This program will be presented by TLGV Rangers Larry and Kitty Lowenthal.  Both currently serve in a volunteer capacity with The Last Green Valley as TLGV Rangers.  Larry is a retired Park Ranger with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Kitty worked as an Interpreter at Old Sturbridge Village.  They both are from Brimfield, MA.

Come to learn more about mystery, mayhem and the unique forensics of optometric vision therapy! Please join us to hear about this fascinating sleuth. All welcome.

Light refreshments will be provided. There will be a book signing following the presentation.

Laura Boyle Presents Cooking with Jane Austen & Friends
Thursday, August 30th at 6:30 p.m.

Cooking with Jane Austen & Friends During this program, Laura Boyle will describe the process of uncovering the "epicurious" side of Jane Austen's novels and of updating these historic hearth recipes for 21st century kitchens, and discuss the process of putting together this unique cookbook! Refreshments, created from these recipes, will be served.

"Food plays an important part in all of Jane Austen's works. Characters in her novels are marked as fashionable or not by what they choose to eat, how it's prepared and when it's served. In her letters, Jane records various meals and delicacies with an epicurean's enthusiasm as well as her typical sly wit.

Now you can discover Jane Austen's world in a whole new way with these authentic recipes drawn from the pages of Jane Austen's own writings. "Cooking with Jane Austen and Friends" brings the food of the Regency Era to life, converting period recipes into easy to follow instructions for the modern cook. Here you will find over forty dishes suitable for breakfast, dinner, dessert, teas and weddings, as well as ideas for hosting your own Regency dinner, card party or tea.

With recipes ranging from Jane Austen's Breakfast Toast to Elizabeth Bennet's Light, Bright and Sparkling Lemonade, Mrs. Elton's Rout Cakes and Mrs. Weston's Wedding Cake, you'll be set for any occasion and ready to rival Mrs. Bennet's "good table" or two or three of Mr. Darcy's French cooks at least."
