Thank you!

C/W MARS and the Jacob Edwards Library would like to thank all of our patrons for their support and patience in the changes we have made going to a new software system.

We are aware that many of you lost holds in the migration and had other problems with accessing your records throughout the process. We, and our member libraries, are working very hard to address your concerns to ensure you receive the best possible service.

Please be aware that there is nothing simple about our migration. We are one of the largest library networks in the United States with a significant number of transactions happening everyday occurring all across central and western Massachusetts.

In the coming few weeks and months you will continue to see improvements in the library catalog's speed and design as we make adjustments based on patron and library input. The change we made going to the new software has some significant benefits, including one search interface for Central and Western MA, greater flexibility in the design and customization of the catalog, and much more.

We thank all of our patrons for your continued patience and support as we all adjust to this new system together!

Questions?

If you need assistance logging into your online account, searching the catalog, or have any questions, please give us a call at 508-764-5426, stop by the desk, or email us.

Why Can't You Find the eBook You Want From the Library?

Although demand for eBooks is growing, the biggest book publishers are limiting library access to their eBooks.

Some publishers cite security concerns while others point out that eBooks, unlike print books, will never need replacing in a library's collection. They fear that library eBook lending cuts into income for both publishers and authors. As library users, it means limited access to some of the current, popular titles we want to read on our new e-readers.

Different publishers set limits in different ways:

-MacMillan Publishing has never allowed e-books to be distributed to libraries via OverDrive.

-Simon & Schuster has never allowed eBooks to be distributed to libraries via OverDrive.

-Hachette no longer offers e-book titles to libraries via OverDrive.

-HarperCollins limits each eBook to 26 checkouts, then requires libraries to buy another copy.

-Random House recently raised its prices for libraries, as much as 300% more. An example: for Eisenhower in War and Peace by Jean Edward Smith the ebook price went from $40 to $120.  For Blessings by Anna Quindlen the ebook price went from $15 to $45.

-Penguin Group no longer offers e-book titles to libraries via OverDrive. Previously purchased Penguin Kindle titles in our OverDrive catalog will no longer be delivered through a WiFi connection from Amazon. These titles will need to be downloaded to your computer first and then transferred using a USB cord.

As we continue to expand our eBook collection, we hope you understand some of the limitations that are placed on us. The eBook industry continues to evolve and we're optimistic that a workable solution between publishers and libraries will come about.

July's Featured Artist: George Breau
Reception Thursday, July 5th at 6:30 p.m.

"My art is the expression of the deep-seated love that I have for the ocean and life on the New England shore.

George BreauI was born and raised in the city of New Bedford, MA. There I spent my youth and much of my adult life on the fishing piers and at the shoreline. I draw upon my memories of coastal life when creating my oil paintings on canvas.

I discovered my creative nature while recovering from alcohol addiction over 20 years ago, during my stay at the Veteran's Hospital in Northampton. I found painting was an outlet in which I was able to express myself and quickly found solace while unearthing a talent I did not know I possessed.

I've become serious in my artwork since relocating to Southbridge last year with my wife of 47 years, after living on Cape Cod. I have been selling my paintings online over the past few months, which has encouraged my passion to continue painting on a daily basis. I am also a member of the Massasoit Art Guild. Art has provided me with a deep sense of pride and accomplishment while I strive to improve my techniques to capture the beauty of the shoreline from my heart and mind."

About the Library Box Office: Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commerical theaters by Hollywood blockbusters, and face skyrocketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. JEL subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you.
