Evergreen is coming!

Memorial Day Weekend

The switch to our new catalog and library system will occur over Memorial Day weekend, and we plan to be live with the new system on Tuesday, May 29.

Here is what you need to know:

-  From May 25-28, you will not have access to your C/WMARS Patron Account.

-  On May 29, your account password will be reset to your last name

-  Your reading history and wishlists will not be carried over through the migration. If this information is important to you, remember to save it prior to May 25.

Why the switch to a new catalog? Here are some of the benefits:

-  All Central and Western MA items are in ONE catalog! No more switching between catalogs to request items from the other region

-  Navigating your online account is more user-friendly. Your dashboard will guide you to options like Account Summary, Items Checked Out, Holds, Account Preferences, and Lists

-  With Lists you can create and share categorized lists of what you have read or want to read

Fumbling for titles to share with friends and Book Clubs is a thing of the past! Members can share and respond to each other's choices and suggestions

This month's film for the Library Box Office is the Piano in a Factory, a film in Mandarin about a man who tries to win custody of his daughter by building the budding pianist a piano from scratch.

The June 1 tornado had a strong effect on many Southbridge residents - representatives from the MassSupport Network will be here on May 17th to discuss how to deal with the stress that comes with disaster, and how to be better prepared in the future.

If you have an eReader and would like to learn how to download library eBooks, stop by on May 24th for a class on the basics.

Exhibit & Reception: Peter Konsterlie
Reception Thursday, May 3rd at 6:30 p.m.

Jacob Edwards Library is pleased to present the art of Peter Konsterlie. During the month of May, the colorful and striking work including anatomical images, will be on display.

You are invited to view the work throughout the month. A reception for the artist will take place on Thursday, May 3rd from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

"I like to make transparent painting. To make pattern andPeter Konsterlie champion line. Separate and distill painting. one drip in front of the other. Technical, I was reducing my way of painting by using more line and pattern. Lines have always been a very important element in my work. The black markers brought out a diagram quality in the work. The hand written terms and directional lines became as much of the composition as the subject matter. A visual aid that is ironic because they're mostly unreadable and hard to decipher their meaning. The drips of paint and spray- paint patterns became a structure for the images to break through, and to be a part of. I use tag sale items and unwanted household kitchen objects to make patterns. Growing up I loved artists who used assemblage as their way of creating. As an adult, I feel the days of Rauschenberg are over. I want to make a "whole" painting, not a composition of parts.

Lately I've been thinking of how line and color can be two separate things. I've always thought color informs shape. But now I see it as a totally different way of expression; an element separate from line. A gestural approach with my drawing, but an analytical mark with painting Line work, or in my case the drips are the painting aspect, and color can introduce pattern another plane of reality a schism in the dynamic of painting."

Betrayal of Trust

The Jacob Edwards Library is pleased to present a monthly book discussion! The group is informal and friendly and new participants are welcome.

Library staff will obtain copies of each title, one month before the discussion date. Please inquire at the Information Desk to reserve your copy of next month's title!

This month the group will discuss Betrayal of Trust by J.A. Jance:

"Seattle investigator J.P. Beaumont investigates a dark and deadly conspiracy. At first glance, the video appears to be showing a game: a teenage girl with dark wavy hair smiles for the camera, a blue scarf tied around her neck. All of a sudden things turn murderous, and the girl ends up dead. It's as bad as a snuff film can get, and what's worse, the clip has been discovered on a phone that belongs to the governor of Washington State's grandson.

Fortunately, the governor is able to turn to an old friend, J.P. Beaumont, for help. Along with Mel Soames, Beaumont soon discovers that what initially appears to be a childish prank gone wrong has much deeper implications, reaching into the halls of state government itself. But Mel and Beau must follow this path of corruption to its very end, before more innocent young lives are lost."

Library Box Office: The Piano in a Factory
Thursday, May 10th at 6:00 p.m.

The Piano in a Factory"When Chen's estranged wife reappears asking for a divorce and custody of their daughter, the musician girl decides she will live with whoever can provide her with a piano. Chen's struggle thus begins. When efforts to borrow money and even steal a piano fail, Chen concocts a preposterous plan - he'll make a piano from scratch! He persuades a bunch of reluctant, but loyal, misfit friends to help him forge the instrument in a derelict factory from a heap of scrap steel. Though crude in design and tune, the factory piano awaits its first and final performance from his little girl."

Running time: 105 minutes. In Mandarin with English subtitles.
All screenings are held in the Pioppi Room, lower level.

About the Library Box Office: Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commerical theaters by Hollywood blockbusters, and face skyrocketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. JEL subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you.

We estimate a fifth of the collection remains, and will be completed when we are next scheduled to have the machine.
