Evergreen Update

C/W MARS has made the decision to delay the upgrade to the new Evergreen system and catalog to ensure a smooth transition.

Memorial Day Weekend

(May 26th - 28th) has been tentatively set as the new target date. We will do our best to keep our patrons informed of any developments or changes.

Thank you for your continued patience.

Barcoding Project

In addition to the system update, our interlibrary delivery system is making a transition. To accommodate the new handheld system of scanning, all barcodes will have to be placed in the upper-left corner of the item. Staff and volunteers are working through the collection, and making great progress!

Ted Bartlett, tax abatement personnel adds a new barcode.

ScanPro 2000

JEL is pleased to offer our patrons a new, state-of-the-art microfilm scanner!

This digital scanner gives researchers the ability to crop and save specific articles directly to a flash drive as a high-resolution PDF file. It also has image-editing capabilities to clear up grainy newspaper images, a word-search function, and many other great features that make research of the newspaper archives easier than ever.

Yearbook Digitization Project

Thanks to the Digital Commonwealth of MA and grant from the Boston Public Library, the library's collection of local yearbooks is in the process of being digitized. When finished, the run of Southbridge High School yearbooks from 1919 to present will be available online.

Though many of the yearbooks were in the library's collection, missing years were supplied by the generous donations of Roland and Jackie Varin, Helen Santilli, Martha Fearing, and Katherine Colognesi. Special thanks to Helen Santilli and the Harrington Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, without whom many of those missing years might not have been found!

This project is 12 years in the making, with yearbooks being collected since the 2000 reunion of Mary E. Wells Alumni. Keep an eye out for the digitized yearbooks, coming soon!

Then a teacher and one of her students are murdered, and the boneheaded police chief considers Annie a suspect. To clear herself, Annie sets out to solve the crimes, with help from her husband, Max."

Exhibit & Reception:
Charlotte Burns - In Love with the Natural World
Reception Thursday, April 5th at 6:30 p.m.

This month's art exhibit displays paintings and drawings in water color pencil, pastels, oil pastels, crayons and oils by Charlotte Burns. Read on to find out more!

"'I'm addicted to drawing and I'm addicted to nature.'

Charlotte Burns is a refugee from the urban sprawl of Eastern MA who stumbled upon this area 25 years ago when her then-husband took a job in Springfield. 'This is a nature lover's paradise, lots of hills to climb, woods to explore, and rivers to paddle.' She only hopes this area never suffers the destructive urbanization of Greater Boston and Cape Cod.

After a failed attempt at studying architecture at Pratt Institute in the early 70's, ('I couldn't do math or physics if my life depended on it'), she studied painting at the Art Institute of Boston. She then went on to a BFA at UMASS Dartmouth back when it was Southeastern MA University. She earned a teaching certificate in art, but like many of us took a different path and went on to teach special education.

'Art has a way of catching up to you if it's in your blood.'

At a library book sale, Charlotte found an ancient volume of drawings by Edith Blackwell Holden, a nature lover who recorded her impressions in her journal, Nature Notes for 1906. Inspired, she bought a sketch pad of her own and made a vow only to draw what caught her eye and not be self-conscious about what the sketches looked like. That was ten years ago, 50 sketch pads ago, and she's been drawing ever since.

'I hope you enjoy my pictures as much as I've enjoyed the natural world that has been my inspiration.'"

Please join us for the Artist's Reception on Thursday, April 5th from 6:30-7:30 p.m. - refreshments provided by the Friends of JEL - or stop by any time this month to view the show!
Display: Cross Stitch by
Lori Holmes Fournier

Also on display this month is a selection of cross stitch, hand-crafted by Lori Holmes Fournier.

"My family moved to Southbridge when I was twelve, we moved from the Boston area. I attended Mary E. Wells junior high school and then Bay Path where I took Fashion Design.

Lori Holmes FournierIn my Sophomore year we had to learn a certain type of embroidery and stitch it onto the smock of an infants outfit that we had to sew, this handwork had me intrigued and I started looking at other types of handwork to try. I found Cross stitch which at the time the designs were mainly printed onto fabric and you followed a guide to show what colors to stitch and where. This I did for many years until stitching companies were really phasing that out and pushing counted cross stitch. For another couple years I kept stitching the printed pieces because I was to afraid to attempt the counted cross stitching, even though I found that the counted had so many more beautiful & mature designs than just baby bibs, blankets and such.

About 10 years ago I found I didn't want to stitch any more of the printed designs and attempted my first counted piece. I LOVED it and was amazed at how easy it was and all the years I could have been stitching what I really love. I love Primitive, Historical, the Famous Paintings & almost anything related to Salem, Massachusetts and the Witch Trials of 1692.

Seven years ago I was hired on as a Freelance Model Stitcher for a company in New York. What this means is, they send me the chart/graph along with the fabric and fibers and I stitch the model. The pieces I stitch then are sent back to New York where they stretch the fabric onto a mounting board, frame the piece, photograph it and make up the packages that are then sold to craft stores, online catalogs and some local craft stores that are not part of the big chain stores. It's a neat feeling to walk into a store and see a picture of a piece that you stitched before anyone else in the world has seen it, or to look through catalogs and see your work displayed. It also allows me to stay home where I have home schooled my youngest daughter for the past 3 years. "

Please stop by to see the pieces, which will be on display for the month of April!
