Evergreen Update

C/W MARS has made the decision to delay the upgrade to the new Evergreen system and catalog to ensure a smooth transition.

A new target date has not yet been set, but we will keep you updated with more news as we receive it!

Thank you for your continued patience.

Barcoding Project

In addition to the system update, our interlibrary delivery system is making a transition. To accommodate the new handheld system of scanning, all barcodes will have to be placed in the upper-left corner of the item. Staff and volunteers are working through the collection, and making great progress!

Ted Bartlett, tax abatement personnel adds a new barcode.

I'd Know You Anywhere

The Jacob Edwards Library is pleased to present a monthly book discussion! The group is informal and friendly and new participants are welcome.

Library staff will obtain copies of each title, one month before the discussion date. Please inquire at the Information Desk to reserve your copy of next month's title!

This month the group will discuss I'd Know You Anywhere by Laura Lippman:

"Eliza Benedict cherishes her peaceful, ordinary suburban life with her successful husband and children. But her tranquility is shattered when she receives a letter from the last person she ever expects - or wants - to hear from: Walter Bowman. In the summer of 1985, when she was fifteen, Eliza was kidnapped by Walter and held hostage for almost six weeks.

'There was your photo, in a magazine. Of course, you are older now. Still, I'd know you anywhere.'"

Library Box Office: Into the Light
Thursday, March 8th at 6:00 p.m.

A behind the scenes documentary about staging the opera The Magic Flute, directed by Karen Ryker. The 25 minute movie will be screened and then the director Professor Ryker will discuss the project. In 2009, Ryker spent a semester in Ireland as a Fulbright Scholar, working with Irish conductor William Halpin at the Dublin Institute's Conservatory of Music and Drama.  This film documents some of that experience.

Directing a Mozart production was "like falling off a log into really warm water," Ryker says.  "Mozart is a lot like Shakespeare. He tells you exactly how to stage a performance. His music simply says: 'This is a light, airy moment. This is the time to pull out the dagger. This is when she falls.' It's all right there in the music."

Karen Ryker is Professor of Voice and Acting in the Department of Dramatic Arts, University of Connecticut

About the Library Box Office: Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commerical theaters by Hollywood blockbusters, and face skyrocketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. JEL subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you.

Celtic/Irish Music with Sarah Jo Burke
Thursday, March 22nd at 6:30 p.m.

Distinguished performer Sarah Jo Burke will return to Southbridge to present her engaging music and will tip her hat to St. Paddy's Day. An accomplished guitarist, tin whistle player, percussionist and vocalist, Sarah Jo brings her energy to every event.

Sarah Jo BurkeMs. Burke is a member of the nationally-recognized Burke Family Singers, and is a veteran performer. The family drove across the United States and Canada in two station wagons, and for the better part of the 1960s were known as "America's First Family of Song." This Irish-Catholic family from Rhode Island was once hailed as America's answer to the Von Trapp family. She has recounted her memoirs in her book Don't Think It Hasn't Been Fun. Her father, Walter Vincent Burke, and mother, the former Miss Anne Devine, produced 10 siblings (five brothers, five sisters) in 13 years, managing to create a perfect chorus of voices ready to entertain any audience.

All are welcome! Light refreshments provided by Friends of the Jacob Edwards Library.
