JEL News & Events

December 2011

Greetings!

The holidays are here again, and we have another month of great programs!

Crafter Joni Metras will be displaying a collection of handmade greeting cards throughout the month in the Main Hall, and the display cases will be filled with Gingerbread Houses created by kids right here at JEL (see the Children's Corner for more information!). Reception tonight!

This month's foreign film for the Library Box Office is Little Sparrows, an Australian film that follows three sisters after they learn that this Christmas will be their last as a family.

Sarah Jo Burke, who as a child was one of the youngest members of the Burke Family Singers, will discuss her new book Don't Think It Hasn't Been Fun, and her experiences as a member of "America's von Trapp Family" on December 15th.

And of course, our Holiday Concert with Hunter Foote will be on Monday, the 19th - bring the family to enjoy some great holiday music!

Looking for something for the kids to do during winter vacation? They can learn to play chess, make some crafts, and learn about recycling!

We hope to see you soon!

Evergreen is Coming!

A new year, a new catalog! Beginning January 2nd, our library will be running on Evergreen!

Here's what you need to know:

  • From Dec. 30 to Jan. 2, you will not have access to your C/WMARS Patron Account.
  • When you log in to the new catalog on January 2, your old password will not be effective. Your new password will be the last four digits of your library barcode (you will be required to change it to the password of your choice upon first login).
  • Your current reading history and wishlists will not be carried over through the migration. We mean it when we say that this information is private! If this information is important to you, remember to export it prior to December 30.
  • Online payment of library fees in the new catalog will not be possible until further notice. We are truly sorry for any inconvenience.
And now on to the fun stuff! Here are some of the great features you can expect with the new system:

  • All Central and Western MA items are in ONE catalog! You won't have to switch between them to request an item from the alternate region.
  • Navigating your patron login is more intuitive. A set of tabs called "the dashboard" guides you to options like your Account Summary, Items Checked Out, Holds, Account Preferences, and Lists!
  • Did we say Lists? That's right. Friends and Family won't believe how organized you are when you provide them with categorized lists of your reading materials! Which brings us to the next item...
  • Lists can be broadcast over the new RSS feed! Faltering for titles and wasting time at Book Club is a thing of the past! Members will have already responded to each others choices and recommendations as they are broadcast to each other in real time!
Here at JEL we are very excited for the upgrade, and are happy to answer any and all questions you may have! We will do our best to maintain the level of service you are used to seeing throughout the transition.

Staff has been training to learn the new system and will be taking refresher webinars in the next few weeks. This is a new experience for patrons and staff alike, and we are eager to implement this newer and upgraded system.

Exhibit & Reception: Joni Metras
Reception Thursday, December 1st at 6:30 p.m.

Joni Metras will display a collection of her handmade greeting cards in the Main Hall beginning on Thursday, December 1st and running through the end of the month. Please join us for the reception that evening at 6:30 p.m.!

Joni Metras"Joni Metras enjoys creating in different ways! She is probably best known for her on-stage antics at Gateway Players Theater, Inc., here in Southbridge. She is a long-time member of the theater and has appeared in numerous shows there. When she is not appearing on stage, however, she truly enjoys crafting in her home.

A scrapbooker for fun, Joni's love for stamping and card-making began after attending a Stampin' Up! workshop at a friend's house. Being a teacher, she didn't think of rubber stamps as saying anything other than "Good Job!," or "Please sign and return!" That quickly changed, however, and she has been designing and creating greeting cards (and other crafts using stamps) ever since! She is now skilled in using the many different techniques that use rubber stamps to create what she likes to call art!

Originally from the Cape, Joni lives in Charlton with her husband Steve (who was born and raised in Southbridge) and her furbabies. She has two grown sons and a soon-to-be daughter-in-law!"

Mystery Book Club
Monday, December 5th at 6:30 p.m.
For the Love of Mike

The Jacob Edwards Library is pleased to present a monthly book discussion! The group is informal and friendly and new participants are welcome.

Library staff will obtain copies of each title, one month before the discussion date. Please inquire at the Information Desk to reserve your copy of next month's title!

This month's title for discussion is For the Love of Mike by Rhys Bowen. There will be no January meeting due to the holidays.

"A woman ahead of her time, Molly Murphy is determined to be a private detective. Having inherited the cases of her deceased mentor, Paddy Reilly, she's following philandering husbands, tracking down a runaway Dublin debutante, and working in a sweatshop to discover who's purloining dress designs. None of her jobs seem dangerous...at first.

When a woman's body is fished out of the East River, Molly fears it's the missing society girl. Then Molly's sometime beau, police captain Daniel Sullivan, reveals that another corpse may be the girl's scalawag lover, Mike Kelly. But Molly has to know their identities for certain. Now as threads of passion and greed weave a tapestry of violence, Molly descends into the underworld of the gangs of New York. It's no place for a lady, and even a scrappy Irish lass may need more than her street smarts to get the truth...and get out alive."

Little Sparrows
ss unhappily married to a filmmaker. Christine is a med student who has yet to fully come to terms with her sexuality. When their mother Susan's breast cancer returns, the family is faced with the reality of their last Christmas together. As each daughter confronts personal change and growth, Susan guides them by revealing a secret of her own."

Little Sparrows is an Australian film which was an Official Selection of several international film festivals. Running time: 88 minutes.

About the Library Box Office: Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commerical theaters by Hollywood blockbusters, and face skyrocketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. JEL subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you.
Don't Think It Hasn't Been Fun
Sarah Jo Burke
Thursday, December 15th at 6:30 p.m.

The story of the nationally-recognized Burke Family Singers is
Burke Family Singers
On the Ed Sullivan Show, December 1963
recounted in the book Don't Think It Hasn't Been Fun by sibling Sara Jo. Their father, Walter Vincent Burke, and mother, the former Miss Anne Devine, produced 10 siblings (five brothers, five sisters) in 13 years, managing to create a perfect chorus of voices ready to entertain any audience.

They drove across the United States and Canada in two station wagons and for the better part of the 1960s were known as "America's First Family of Song." This Irish-Catholic Family from Rhode Island was once hailed as America's answer to the Austrian Von Trapp family.

Sarah Jo Burke, the youngest of the five daughters, has written a book that celebrates American values in the best sense and, if nothing else, proves that the family that sings together stays together.

Meet the author and listen to her tell some of the stories in person at JEL on December 15th. All are welcome!

Holiday Concert: Hunter Foote
Monday, December 19th at 6:30 p.m.

We are pleased to welcome back Hunter Foote for another Holiday Concert! Hunter will be performing his eclectic sampling of music with a holiday theme.

Hunter FooteHunter has been studying violin since the age of 5. Using his talent and passion for music, Hunter has shared this gift with hundreds of groups and organizations. Some of Hunter's earliest performances were for local churches, senior centers, charity fundraisers and, of course JEL!  Hunter has since become a much sought after solo performer at weddings, funerals, private parties, restaurants, and town festivals, but he still makes time for lots of volunteering and benefits. Hunter also plays with a trio, The Boys of the Town, performing traditional Irish music.

Hunter was home schooled until he entered college at 13 years old. He graduated from Holyoke Community College with a double major in Music and Liberal Arts and continues with his studies.

This event is funded by the Friends of the Jacob Edwards Library.
