Evergreen Switch Postponed
| |
Although the switch to Evergreen has been postponed, all libraries on the C/W MARS network will be making the switch over the course of New Years' Weekend. It is anticipated that the new system will be up on Tuesday, January 3rd.
Library staff is currently being trained on the new system, so that when the system changes over we will be able to demonstrate how to use it, and of course answer any questions. We are here for you! This open-source system is the way to go, and staff is excited to be upgrading to a system that is customized to C/W MARS patrons.

Rave Reviews for Trio Winds
| |
Thank you to SSgt. Mickey Ireland for arranging the chamber ensemble's visit to the Jacob Edwards Library! It was an amazing performance to a full house.
SSgt. Chris Stahl returned for his second performance at JEL, and presented a signed photograph of the Liberty Band, of which the Trio Winds is an ensemble.
The Southbridge event was flutist First Airman Rachel Maclary's second public performance in this ensemble, accompanying SSgt. Stahl on bassoon and SSgt. Ireland on clarinet. As this is a newly formed ensemble, Band Manager CMSgt Laura Noel was among the appreciative audience.
The event was broadcast live on cable TV, and we are pleased that we can reach a wider audience in this way - thank you to
Paul Zotos!

JEL News & Events
October 2011
|
|
Greetings!
Now that October has arrived, thoughts of fall leaves, pumpkins and Halloween abound. The library Children's programming is up and running with story hour on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. and crafts on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. There is a new theatre program on Thursday afternoons at 4 p.m. Hora de Cuentos is back too! We hope there will be lots of interest in these events and the Magic and Juggling Show by Scott Jameson on Saturday, October 15 at 11 a.m.
Staff is busy working with performers and musicians applying for grants from the Southbridge Cultural Council who generously fund a significant number of our programming at the library. The other half of our programs are presented by the Friends of the Jacob Edwards Library. Without the support of these two organizations, programming at JEL would not be sustained or as diverse.
Our reporting cycle to the state has begun. We counted 114 children's programs, 91 teen events and 168 adult programs. There are 9,406 patrons, and we subscribe to 121 print magazines and 8 databases.
Please read on for library news, information on the programs and events we have scheduled for October, and more!
We hope to see you soon!

Mystery Book Club
The Jacob Edwards Library is pleased to present a monthly book discussion! The group is informal and friendly and new participants are welcome.
Library staff will obtain copies of each title, one month before the discussion date. Please inquire at the Information Desk to reserve your copy of next month's title!
This month's title for discussion is Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt:
"John Berendt's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil has been heralded as a "lyrical work of nonfiction," and the book's extremely graceful prose depictions of some of Savannah, Georgia's most colorful eccentrics--remarkable characters who could have once prospered in a William Faulkner novel or Eudora Welty short story--were certainly a critical factor in its tremendous success. (One resident into whose orbit Berendt fell, the Lady Chablis, went on to become a minor celebrity in her own right.) But equally important was Berendt's depiction of Savannah socialite Jim Williams as he stands trial for the murder of Danny Hansford, a moody, violence-prone hustler--and sometime companion to Williams--characterized by locals as a "walking streak of sex." So feel free to call it a "true crime classic" without a trace of shame."

Art Exhibit & Reception: Liviu Cupceancu
Reception Thursday, October 6th at 6:30 p.m.
Renowned sculptor and fine artist Liviu Cupceancu will exhibit his work during the month of October.
"My work utilizes the semi abstract elements of nature in organized, imaginative patterns of shape and color. It reveals the agreement between all things in establishing new relationships. For tools, the juxtaposition of dissimilar images and objects, the elaboration of symbolic functions, and the disclosure of hidden symmetry of objects play the most important role."
Liviu Cupceancu was born in Romania in 1943 and is now living in Connecticut. Liviu became interested in art at a very young age, influenced by his artistically inclined parents. He spent most of his childhood in Bucharest, Romania and attended the University of Bucharest School of Biology, where he received his degree. He complimented his studies with art and photography classes at the "Ioan Dalles" Romanian Popular University.
In 1981, Liviu left his communist country in search of freedom and moved to Germany with his wife Elena, and four years later the couple moved to CT. Liviu continued to work on his true passion, art. His work during this time includes photography, surreal acrylics, and abstract oil paintings. In 1998, Liviu made the decision to dedicate himself entirely to his art, and shifted his focus to wood and metal sculpture.
Liviu's work is frequently exhibited in juried art shows where he has received many awards including Best in Show Award at Glastonbury Art Guild's and Third Juror Choice Award at Canton - Gallery on the Green. His work is exhibited year-round in Washington Depot Art Association, Washington, CT; State of Arts Gallery, Hartford, CT; Polonaise Art Gallery, Woodstock, CT; and at his home gallery in CT.

Library Box Office:
If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle
Thursday, October 13th at 6:00 p.m.
Synopsis:
"Silviu has only two weeks left before his release from a hostile juvenile detention center. But when his mother, who abandoned him long ago, returns to take his younger brother away - a brother Silviu raised like a son - those two weeks become an eternity. While his outcries for help fall on deaf ears, he finds himself mercilessly taunted and harassed by the other inmates. And just as Silviu's frustration evolves into full-throttled aggression, he is introduced to a beautiful social worker that he can only dream of being close to. Faced with a slew of conflicting emotions and wild with desperation, Silviu is driven to a surprising act of defiance as he makes a last grasp for freedom."
If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle has won several film festival awards, including the Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival. Running time: 94 minutes, in Romanian with English subtitles.
About the Library Box Office: Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commerical theaters by Hollywood blockbusters, and face skyrocketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. JEL subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you. |

Scott Jameson Magic Show and Juggling Saturday, October 15 at 11 a.m.
Scott Jameson will present a unique family-oriented magic and juggling performance at the Jacob Edwards Library on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 11 a.m. This is not a magic show in the classic 'pull a rabbit out of a hat' sense. Extraordinary juggling and audience participation combine with incredible magic, music, and movement to create an exciting theatrical experience. Featuring routines choreographed to music, and involving members of the audience onstage, this program delights the whole family.
Scott Jameson has been professionally performing for over 13 years. He has received performance and technical instruction from a broad range of award winning variety performers, directors and instructors. This year Scott presented programs across New England, including performances at Coolidge Corner Theatre, and the Cape Cod Center for the Arts. His programs are featured on the rosters of NEFA, Young Audiences of CT and NY State BOCES.
This program is generously supported in part by a grant from the Southbridge Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency and the Friends of the Jacob Edwards Library.

Book Signing: John Corrigan
Thursday, October 27th at 6:30 p.m.
Mystery author John R. Corrigan will be at JEL to discuss his writing. Mr. Corrigan will read a short section from one his novels, as well as a short story, followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

His most recent publications include "Shooter" (Spring 2011, Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine) and "364 Days" (forthcoming in AHMM), as well as his essay "Hands at Rest" in This I Believe: On Fatherhood.
A former journalist, Corrigan earned a master's of fine arts degree from the University of Texas at El Paso. He has worked as a golf columnist and currently writes a weekly post for Type M for Murder. He is currently at work on a new series featuring a female border patrol agent as protagonist.
