JEL News & Events

September 2011

Greetings!

The summer is over, but it was certainly a busy one! We have experienced a tornado and a tropical storm, both rare occurrences here in MA, but they certainly have not dampened peoples' spirits! School is now back in session, and we look forward to a successful school year.

September is also both Library Card Sign Up Month and Hispanic Heritage Month!

Your Library Card is the most important school supply of all. Sign up today - it only takes a few minutes at the Information Desk and you will have free access to library materials, subscription databases, be able to place holds on books, and more!

As baseball star Cal Ripken, Jr. says: "The library card is the smartest card in my wallet. Sign up for yours today."

Back by popular demand is the bilingual story program, Hora de Cuentos. Michelle Garcia reads the books and then offers a small craft with the kids afterwards!

Please read on for library news, information on the programs and events we have scheduled for September, and more!
We hope to see you soon!

SAVE  THE  DATE! - Magician & Juggler Scott Jameson
Scott JamesonThanks to a grant from the Southbridge Cultural Council, Magician and Juggler Scott Jameson will be at the library on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 11 a.m. to present his unique family-oriented magic and juggling performance. This is not a magic show in the classic 'pull a rabbit out of a hat' sense. Extraordinary juggling and audience participation combine with incredible magic, music, and movement to create an exciting theatrical experience. Featuring routines choreographed to music, and involving members of the audience onstage, this program delights the whole family.

New Catalog
Upgrading Columbus Day Weekend

In early October, all libraries on the C/W MARS network will be making the switch to a new, open-source system called Evergreen.

Here's what to expect:
  • Central & Western MA libraries will all be on one catalog
  • Patron Dashboard: This new feature will show all checkouts, holds, items to be picked up, and fines in one place.
  • Lists of items that you can create and share via RSS feed.
And here's what you need to know:
  • From October 7-11, you will not have access to your          C/W MARS patron account.
  • On October 11, your account password will be reset to the last four digits of your library barcode. You will be required to create a new password upon your first login.
  • Current reading history and wishlists will not carry over to the new system. If this information is important to you, remember to export it prior to October 1.
  • Online payment of library fees in the new catalog will not be possible until further notice.
Library staff is currently being trained on the new system, so that when the system changes over, we will be able to demonstrate how to use it, and of course answer any questions. We are here for you! This open-source system is the way to go, and staff is excited to be upgrading to a system that is customized to C/W MARS patrons.

Library Box Office:
Bad Day to Go Fishing - from Uruguay
Thursday, September 8th at 6:00 p.m.

 Synopsis:
"Jacob van Oppen - formerly "the strongest man on earth," now a washed-up alcoholic - and his crafty manager, Orsini, make good money staging bogus wrestling matches in small South American towns.Bad Day to go Fishing When this oddball duo arrives in the unassuming village of Santa Maria, business really takes off: the local newspaper sponsors the fight, and the quiet hamlet becomes plastered with posters announcing an open challenge to a worthy adversary. The ever-resourceful Orsini is sure he can find the right opponent to throw the fight, but fishing in Santa Maria yields a bigger catch than he'd hoped for."

Bad Day to Go Fishing has won several film festival awards, including Best Actor at the Mar del Plata Int'l Film Festival. Running time: 107 minutes, in Spanish with English subtitles.

About the Library Box Office: Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commerical theaters by Hollywood blockbusters, and face skyrocketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. JEL subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you.
USAF Chamber Ensemble
Thursday, September 29th at 6:30 p.m.

The Trio Winds Chamber Ensemble of the UnitTrio Windsed States Air Force Band of Liberty will perform on Thursday, September 29th at 6:30 p.m. in the Reading Room.

The members of the Trio Wind Ensemble are Airman First Class Rachel Maclary, flutist; Staff Sergeant Mickey Ireland, clarinetist; and Staff Sergeant Christopher Stahl, bassoonist.

The USAF Band of Liberty is dedicated to using the power of music to inspire our Air Force members and the great nation we serve, producing innovative musical programs and products, and communicating Air Force excellence throughout New England and around the globe.

All are welcome! Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Jacob Edwards Library.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, ASPIRA is organizing a reception at the Southbridge Hotel and Conference Center on Thursday, September 22 from 5:30 p.m to 8:30 p.m.

ASPIRA Southbridge is the Massachusetts chapter of a national organization supporting Leadership Development/Outreach and programs that provide guidance and academic enrichment/assistance. Jacob Edwards Library has been nominated to receive an award.

Even when the library is not open, patrons with library cards can continue to receive services by accessing our web site or using the free WiFi connection that is accessible from the parking lot and on Main Street in front of the building. During the aftermath of the recent storm, many from the business community have taken advantage of this.

Wishing everyone a happy and safe start to the school year!
