Town Council Meeting

Transition to a New Library System

C/W MARS - a name you are now familiar with - will continue to be our network. In the last year,
C/W MARS has been working with other networks to explore a new system that uses open source software, and has chosen Evergreen.

Merrimack Valley, another network, has already successfully made the switch. Our system will migrate over in early October. During this transition, patrons may see some changes in service at various times during these periods, but we will endeavor to keep any difficulties to a minimum.

JEL Staff will attend training sessions in August & September in preparation for the switch.

Evergreen is open source, and allows C/W MARS to make changes to our own system and provide control over the development, maintenance, reliability and adaptability of our most essential services and their associated costs.

Author Event: Ruth Bolton
Wednesday, August 3rd at 2:00 p.m.

Local author Ruth Bolton will be at JEL to present Heart Pound: and Other Stories, her newly published collection.

"Heart Pound is a collection of short stories, largely of fantasy and/orHeart Pound biography. A war veteran, a baglady, an elderly gentleman, a vetriloquist's widow, a 19th century girl, a businesswoman, and other diverse characters attempt to deal with life's provocative circumstances. Ms. Bolton's early inspiration was Poe's The Telltale Heart. Subsequent stimulation came from writing groups with Barbara Follansbee of New York City and New England prize-winning author Pat Schneider, Patricia Lee Lewis and Cynthia Kennison.

Ruth Bolton, former actress, puppeteer and costumed history interpreter, writes poetry, fiction and drama. The title story appears in Peregrine XIII. Her poetry has won awards, and is published in Peregrine, Worcester Review, and Sahara. She has created illustrated chapbooks of her work. Her play, Farmer Took a Wife, received two stagings.  Synopsis:
"In the heart of the Israeli city of Jaffa, Reuven's garage is a family-run business. The garage workers consist of Reuven's beautiful daughter Mali, his aggressive and distant son Meir, as well as the young Palestinian man, Toufik. No one suspects that Mali anJaffad Toufik have been in love for years, and that Mali is pregnant with Toufik's child. As the two lovers secretly make their wedding arrangements, tension steadily builds between Toufik and Meir, who openly voices his disdain and prejudices about Arabs. As these relationships continue to intensify, emotions begin to boil, resulting in an astonishing conclusion."

Jaffa was an Official Selection of both the Cannes Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. Running time: 105 minutes, in Hebrew with English subtitles.

About the Library Box Office: Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commerical theaters by Hollywood blockbusters, and face skyrocketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. JEL subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you.

Food That's In When School Is Out:
Project Bread Summer Food Service
July 6th - August 12th,  11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

JEL will be a Southbridge site for the Summer Food Service Program this year! Every weekday from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., kids 18 and under can get a free lunch at JEL.
Scott
As an open site, it is difficult to estimate the number of meals needed each day. However, with the best guess estimate, and the full cooperation of the Food Service staff who are willing to deliver extras at very short notice, this program has become very successful. There are an average of 30 lunches served each day by the students from the Southern Worcester County Educational Cooperative.

Children who have access to nutritious meals throughout the summer return to school in the fall ready to learn, and the Sum-
SFSP Logomer Food Service Program (SFSP) helps make this possible. It allows kids 18 and under to enjoy the same healthy lunches they get in school here at JEL all summer long, for free!

No regiKids Eat Free Herestration or identification is needed. Crafts and other activities and programs will also be available during the time frame. The SFSP is a nutritious, safe, and fun way for children to get healthy meals when school is out!

¡Los niños de 18 años de edad y menores pueden disfrutar de una variedad de actividades y comidas sin costo alguno durante todo el verano!

The magic show presented by Frank Damelio was a resounding success! Eighty-five participants were entertained and captivated by the magic. Thanks to Project Bread and Summer Food Service for the sponsorship!

A timely donation has given us the opportunity to offer another pasttime at the library in addition to the
ever-popular chess boards! Staff is amazed at how popular the chess has become. A 1,000 piece puzzle of "World's Most Beautiful Butterflies" can be found in the Main Hall - the table is set up, and patrons have already started to fit the puzzle together. This is your invitiation to stop by and contribute!

FEMA and SBA office at JEL is now closed. However, there is still time to apply - homeowners can file through August 15th, 2011 by calling 1-800-621-3362.
We hope to see you soon!
