Generations Online

A free introduction to the internet for seniors!

Sponsored by Catholic Charities and Senior Service America, this new program will allow those with little or no computer experience to learn!  Please call to schedule a session or to learn more:

New meeting room!

Due to the growing demand for study space and meetings, the library has been able to repurpose the periodicals storage area as both a smaller archival space and a meeting space by installing a table, chairs, and whiteboard.  There are many occasions when all the rooms are in use.

The trend in periodicals is changing, where many well-known titles have been discontinued.  Given the availability of many titles online, and people's increased access to computers, the need for long-term storage is diminished, hence the additional space.

All of the rooms are available for public use, for more details, please see here!

Greetings!

With the start of a new year comes a new listing of programs for all ages!

Join us on January 6th to meet the artist of 2011's first art exhibit, Marley Lanctot.  Can't make it to the reception?  The exhibit will be on display throughout the month of January!

The Library Box Office continues this month with Alamar, an award-winning film in Spanish and Italian.

Thanks to a generous grant from the MA Renewable Energy Trust's Clean Energy Choice program, we have two great "green" programs to offer this month!  Learn how to "Grow Your Green Esteem" on January 15th by reducing your carbon footprint, and how to save money by going green on January 20th.

And of course, don't forget our ongoing programs - Knitting with Sonya every Tuesday morning, the teen Anime club every Tuesday afternoon, our Inkwell Imaginings writing group every Monday, and the new Teen Center every Monday after school!

Read on for the details on all of these programs and more!

January's Art Exhibit: Marley Lanctot
Reception Thursday, January 6th at 6:30 p.m.

Marley Lanctot is a 23 year old resident of Southbridge, Massachusetts. After attending Southbridge High School and graduating in 2005, she continued her education at the University of Hartford where she attended the Hartford Art School and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Illustration in 2009.

In 2005 she provided the logo design currently used by the Southbridge Police Department. She has also provided illustrations for author Lynn DiGregorio Sarty in her poetry book "Earth, Air, Fire, Water: A Wreath of Rhymes" published in 2007.

"Momo's Day" is Marley's first publication written and illustrated herself in 2010 and is currently on sale at www.xlibris.com.  Copies will also be available for purchase and signing during the reception.  Concurrent with the reception, Michael Caprera, another Southbridge resident and talented musician will be performing in the Reading Room.

Marley works in various media, including watercolor, acrylic, oil, and digital illustration. She is currently working freelance and is open for commissions.  Marley has previously participated in group shows at the library, and we are thrilled that she is now exhibiting a solo show!

Intent on teaching Natan about their Mayan heritage, Jorge takes him to the pristine Chinchorro reef, and eases him into the rhythms of a fisherman's life. As the bond between father and son grows stronger, Natan learns to live in harmony with life above and below the surface of the sea".

About the Library Box Office:
Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commercial theaters by Hollywood blockbusters and face skyrocketing marketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences.  The Jacob Edwards Library subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you.

  2. What are the health hazards of lead paint?
  3. How do the regulations regarding lead paint protect children?

Recurring Events

Inkwell Imaginings
Mondays, January 10th, 24th, and 31st at 6:00 p.m.
The writing group continues with its new weekly schedule this month - all aspiring writers are welcome!

"Remember the first sentence you ever read? Okay, so probably not. Do you remember, though, thaWritingt wonderful feeling the vivid scenes and imagery gave you? Sweeping you up in a maelstrom of emotion, chaos, and tragic beauty that so seems to elude you no matter how many times you re-write it or bang your head on the table?

Well, welcome to the club. In the immortal words of Douglas Adams: "DON'T PANIC!" There is hope and there is help. While this group won't be the answer to all of your descriptive dilemmas we may be able to help you through at least a few scenes on your way to your ultimate masterpiece.

We welcome you with open arms and bleeding pens to Inkwell Imaginings, a writing group started by two struggling authors (much like yourself), looking to provide an outlet and support through the trials and tribulations of the writing world. While not experts we can lend a helping hand and sympathetic ear, allowing each of us to grow and empower you and your quest to become published... or just to write a story that you can be proud of."
