L.M. Browning Poetry Reading
Thursday, December 2nd at 6:30 p.m.
Please join us for a reading by L.M. Browning, author of Oak Wise and, most recently, Ruminations at Twilight. Following the reading, Ms. Browning will be available to sign copies of her book. Read on for a bit more about Ms. Browning and her poetry:
"Asserting that the sacred lives in what is ordinary and the Divine is found amongst the green of nature, the poems within Ruminations at Twilight bring a message of appreciation for the worth of what surrounds us. Relevant, insightful, candid and revealing, these verses give a unique perspective on the age-old questions. The story told takes place on an intimate scale yet at the same time a world-wide scale; for within this story of one individual's realization and redemption we are told that of all humanity's."
L.M. Browning grew up in a small fishing village in Connecticut. She began writing at the age of 15 following what she describes as a profound spiritual awakening. In 2010, Ms. Browning became a partner at Hiraeth Press, an Independent Publisher of Contemplative and Ecological titles based outside Boston, in the watershed of Massachusetts. She is an Associate Editor of the quarterly publication, Written River: A Journal of Eco-Poetics. Continuing to reside in Connecticut, she is currently studying for a degree in Philosophy through The University of London External Programme, in conjunction with Yale University in New Haven Connecticut; while working as a Teacher of Special Education. Ms. Browning's forthcoming titles include her first full-length novel, anticipated for a Spring 2011 release and her next poetry collection entitled, From the Blood of the Wound slated for release in December 2011 (Hiraeth Press).

Library Box Office Presents: Man of the Year
Thursday, December 9th at 6:00 p.m.
The Friends of the Jacob Edwards Library present Man of the Year, which will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Pioppi Room, lower level. Candy will be available for purchase.
Man of the Year was an official selection of the Cannes Film Festival, and winner of Best Film at the San Francisco International Film Festival. Synopsis: "Maiquel (Murilo Benicio) has lost a bet and dyed his hair blond. This little event triggers a head-on collision with destiny in which Maiquel goes from nobody to hero to outlaw...all in 24 hours. Based on the award-winning novel by Patricia Melo "O Matador", this vibrant and brazen crime saga follows in the vein of recent Brazilian Cinema such as Vincente Amorim's Middle of the World, Walter Salles' Central Station and Fernando Meirelles' City of God." About the Library Box Office:
Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commercial theaters by Hollywood blockbusters and face skyrocketing marketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. The Jacob Edwards Library subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you. |
Holiday Concert: Hunter Foote
Thursday, December 16th at 6:00 p.m.
Local celebrity Hunter Foote will be performing at the Jacob Edwards Library on Thursday, December 16, at 6 p.m. Hunter will be performing his eclectic sampling of music with a holiday music theme. Hunter may be joined by another up and coming musician, Rori Coakley. Rori is the pianist at St Joseph Parish in North Brookfield MA. She has been working on Hunter's Christmas CD with him.
Hunter has been studying violin since the age of 5. Using his talent and passion for music, Hunter has shared this gift with hundreds of groups and organizations. Some of Hunter's earliest performances were for local churches, senior centers and charity fundraisers. Hunter has since become a much sought after solo performer at weddings, funerals, private parties, restaurants, and town festivals but he still makes time for lots of volunteering and benefits. Hunter also plays with a trio, The Boys of the Town, performing traditional Irish music.
Hunter was home schooled until he entered college at 13 years old. He graduated this past May from Holyoke Community College with a double major in Music and Liberal Arts. He is now attending the Isenberg School of Management at UMASS Amherst to earn his Bachelors Degree in business.

This event is funded by the Southbridge Cultural Council. |

Inkwell Imaginings
Mondays, December 6, 13, and 20 at 6:00 p.m. |
The writing group continues with its new weekly schedule this month! December 6th's meeting will be a workshop on grammar & sentence structure, and on the 20th the group will hold a workshop on writing realistic dialog.
"Remember the first sentence you ever read? Okay, so probably not. Do you remember, though, tha t wonderful feeling the vivid scenes and imagery gave you? Sweeping you up in a maelstrom of emotion, chaos, and tragic beauty that so seems to elude you no matter how many times you re-write it or bang your head on the table?
Well, welcome to the club. In the immortal words of Douglas Adams: "DON'T PANIC!" There is hope and there is help. While this group won't be the answer to all of your descriptive dilemmas we may be able to help you through at least a few scenes on your way to your ultimate masterpiece.
We welcome you with open arms and bleeding pens to Inkwell Imaginings, a writing group started by two struggling authors (much like yourself), looking to provide an outlet and support through the trials and tribulations of the writing world. While not experts we can lend a helping hand and sympathetic ear, allowing each of us to grow and empower you and your quest to become published... or just to write a story that you can be proud of." |

The end of the year is a time for reflection, where we think about all that has happened in library-land. There is now just one state-wide library and CMRLS (our former regional library) is no more! Thanks to the Board of Trustees we have ten new computers and a server, The Friends of the Jacob Edwards Library funded most of our programs and the Southbridge Cultural Council sponsored some of the the events too! Generous donations have come our way too - many as memorial gifts remembering friends you have passed. Thank you everyone for your cooperation and support!
Summer Reading, a big event at Jacob Edwards Library, continues to grow and includes all ages! During 2010, the staff has enjoyed helping our patrons get the materials they need (including games!) and meeting new residents and welcoming them to the community. It has been our privilege to serve you.
The staff would like to thank all of you, our loyal patrons, for choosing the library to be your one-stop-shopping for free educational and recreational materials. Be sure to stop by the library this month, and enjoy some of the programs we have lined up! We look forward to seeing you, and wish all of our patrons a happy and peaceful holiday season!
