Jacob Edwards Library
Greetings!
This November, the Jacob Edwards Library has a great variety of programs for you and your family! We start with the opening reception for this month's art exhibit on the 4th, "Winter and the Lost Villages of the Quabbin," by Anna Ozolins and Suzanne Chaffee - with Larry Lowenthal as a speaker on the history behind the lost treasures of the Quabbin.
Spend a Saturday morning with us on the 13th for National Gaming Day - we'll have Wii games and board games for kids and teens of all ages!
Recognized gun expert Nicholas Chandler will give a presentation that covers his newly published Early American Underhammer Guns, followed by a book signing on the 18th. On the 24th, students have the day off from school, and families are welcome to join us for a viewing of Little Women in the Pioppi Room.
And don't forget our ongoing programs - from Knitting with Sonya to the Anime Club, and our newly expanded writing group Inkwell Imaginings, we have something for everyone.
Be sure to check out the sidebar as well for info on Food for Fines, NaNoWriMo, internet classes, and more!
The library was the recipient of a beautiful bouquet from our friend Vince Chenevert - check out the nice image on our homepage - and two specimen plants from the McLoughlin family. |

November 2010 Reception Thursday, November 4th at 6:30 p.m. |
You are invited to join us at the Jacob Edwards Library for the opening of the exhibit by Anna Ozolins and Suzanne Chaffee, on Thursday, November 4th at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served by the Friends of the Jacob Edwards Library. He received his bachelor's degree in history from Rutgers University (1967) and a master's degree in history from Yale University (1969). He worked at the Springfield [Massachusetts] Armory National Historic Site from 1979 to 1992, and then with the Boston Support Office of the National Park Service from 1992 to 1999. They have lived in Brimfield since 1977. Their two sons have long since left the nest. However, they share their home and hearts with the cutest dog on the planet. Suzanne consid ers herself so lucky to have discovered ART early on, she says I find it difficult to understand why everyone does not do it. It calms you down when you are stressed and when you are relaxed it can excite you. You never are without a gift and if you forget to buy a card you just whip one up. My family are very supportive of me. I have 2 home studios A, and B(for Basement). Anna M. Ozolins of Little Gallery in the Woods in Brimfield, MA is a watercolor painter and graphic designer. corporate world, she finally arrived at the point where she engages her time exploring the world around her. Most of her days she paints, enters juried shows and displays her artwork as well as organizes events where she and her contemporaries are able to meet fellow artists during receptions and socialize with art lovers. Some of her most favorite hours are those tending her garden. How could you not love the color of flowers? Tending to my gardens is like feeding your children. An armchair ornithologist, Anna brings flora onto her paper in form, color and impression.
Anna donates much of her time to advocating the arts in Southbridge, MA, and gives of her time recently to teaching at the Center of Hope, a center for challenged adults. |

Early Underhammer Guns Presentation
Thursday, November 18th at 6:30 p.m. | The Jacob Edwards Library is pleased to welcome back author and collector Nick Chandler to Southbridge. Author of the newly published Early American Underhammer Firearms: A Collector's Guide to the Pistols and Longarms Made Between 1826 and 1840, Mr. Chandler will present a talk about these handsome historical guns that were manufactured in Southbridge and Sturbridge by five gun makers for a few years.
Did you know that Southbridge was a place where underhammer guns were made, albeit for a short number of years? Please consider attending the program and hearing this fascinating story. Light refreshments will be served, compliments of the Friends of Jacob Edwards Library. All are welcome!
Copies of this beautifully illustrated book will be available for purchase directly from the author who will also be available to sign copies. This book is a treasure in terms of local history and would make a great gift for the holiday season.
A small sample of some of these rare historical guns will be on display throughout the month. |
Movie: Little Women Wednesday, November 24th at 2:00 p.m. | |
Thanksgiving Break is here, and all are welcome to join us for a viewing of Little Women! The 1994 adaptation features Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst, Claire Danes, and Susan Sarandon. It is rated PG, and runs 115 minutes. The viewing will be held in the Pioppi Room, and refreshments will be provided!
We may not have snow, but on a day that there is no school, we will have two hours to visit how it was for young women long ago.
"Winona Ryder and Susan Sarandon star in this 'affectionate, superbly acted' (Los Angeles Times) family favorite. With her husband off at war, Marmee is left alone to raise their four daughters, her "Little Women." There is the spirited Jo; conservative Meg; fragile Beth; and romantic Amy. As the years pass, the sisters share some of the most cherished and painful memories of self-discovery, as Marmee and Aunt March guide them through issues of independence, romance and virtue. Gabriel Byrne, Eric Stoltz and Christian Bale co-star in this 'handcrafted valentine' (Newsweek) of a film." |
Inkwell Imaginings
Mondays, November 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29 at 6:00 p.m. |
The writing group continues with its new weekly schedule this month! November 8th's meeting will be a workshop on outlining your story, and the 22nd will be a workshop on world building.
"Remember the first sentence you ever read? Okay, so probably not. Do you remember, though, tha t wonderful feeling the vivid scenes and imagery gave you? Sweeping you up in a maelstrom of emotion, chaos, and tragic beauty that so seems to elude you no matter how many times you re-write it or bang your head on the table?
Well, welcome to the club. In the immortal words of Douglas Adams: "DON'T PANIC!" There is hope and there is help. While this group won't be the answer to all of your descriptive dilemmas we may be able to help you through at least a few scenes on your way to your ultimate masterpiece.
We welcome you with open arms and bleeding pens to Inkwell Imaginings, a writing group started by two struggling authors (much like yourself), looking to provide an outlet and support through the trials and tribulations of the writing world. While not experts we can lend a helping hand and sympathetic ear, allowing each of us to grow and empower you and your quest to become published... or just to write a story that you can be proud of." |
