Fine Bone China and Watercolor Exhibit
Charles & Peter Gaulin
October 2010
Reception Thursday, October 7th at 6:30 p.m.

Peter Gaulin shares his remarkable collection of fine bone china throughout the month.  Mr. Gaulin previously worked at Golden State Porcelain Inc., formerly located in Santa Maria, California - a sister company of Yamago Togyo, Gifu, Japan. During his time there, he was general manager having responsibility for decal decoration, hand and machine gilding fire, quality control and materials management.

Golden State Porcelain was recognized in the industry as a leading decorator of world class fine china, and was highly sought out as the decorator for many of the high end companies such as Tiffany, Lenox, and Waterford Wedgwood.

This experience gives Peter a unique perspective and contribution to this area of the craftsmanship.

Charles Gaulin attended the Worcester Art Museum School and has studied under various master painters that include AlCharles Gaulinex Gazonis, Betty Lou Schlem, and David Lussier.

Charles is a Southbridge resident and is the owner of Gaulin Studio in Charlton, MA.

He is especially fond of Plein Air painting as it gives him the opportunity to study and paint the effects of light on the ever changing landscape.  He is available for commissioned work and the studio is open on a call-ahead basis.
Hunter Foote Plays Violin
Thursday, October 7th at 6:30 p.m.
Local celebrity Hunter Foote will be performing at the Jacob Edwards Library on Thursday, October 7, at 6:30 PM. Hunter will be performing his eclectic sampling of music; from his own originals, classical to rock Irish, fiddle and lots in-between!

Hunter has been studying violin since the age of 5. Using his talent and passion for music, Hunter has shared this gift with hundreds of groups and organizations. Some of Hunter's earliest performances were for local churches, senior centers and charity fundraisers. Hunter has since become a much sought after solo performer at weddings, funerals, private parties, restaurants, and town festivals but he still makes time for lots of volunteering and benefits. Hunter also plays with a trio, The Boys of the Town, performing traditional Irish music.

Hunter was home schooled until he entered college at 13 years old. He graduated this past May from Holyoke Community College with a double major in Music and Liberal Arts. He is now attending the Isenberg School of Management at UMASS Amherst to earn his Bachelors Degree in business.

Library Box Office: Eldorado
Thursday, October 14th at 6:00 p.m.
The Library Box Office Presents:         Somers Town Eldorado
The Friends of the Jacob Edwards Library present Eldorado, which will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Pioppi Room, lower level.  Candy will be available for purchase.

Eldorado was the winner of Best European Film at the Cannes Film Festival, and an Official Selection of the La Rochelle International Film Festival.

Synopsis:
"Yvan and Elie are two loners who wander aimlessly through their lives.  Yvan is a quick-tempered 40-year-old vintage car dealer while Elie is a young burglar and ex-junkie. One day Yvan catches Elie trying to rob him. Instead of beating him up, he becomes strangely attached to him and agrees to drive him home to his parents in his old Chevrolet. Yvan and Elie are both nostalgic about lost relationships, which is what leads them to undertake a bizarre journey through a region that is as spectacular as it is crazy. Both are trying to find the pieces of a puzzle that they want to put back together, but it might be too late."

About the Library Box Office:
Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commercial theaters by Hollywood blockbusters and face skyrocketing marketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences.  The Jacob Edwards Library subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you.

Book Signing: S.J. Wolfe
Thursday, October 21st at 6:30 p.m.

Please join us for a fascinating talk on the history of mummies in America! S.J. Wolfe will discuss topics covered in her book, Mummies in 19th Century America.

"This work examines Egyptian mummies as artifacts in pre-1900 America - how they got here, what happened to them afterwards, and how they were perceived by the public and archaeologists. Collected newspaper accounts and other documents reveal the progression of American interest in mummies as curiosities, commodities, and cultural lessons. Numerous mummies which no longer exist are identified, and commentary on mummy coffins and discussion of methods of public exhibition are included."

S.J. Wolfe is a senior cataloger and serials specialist at the American Antiquarian Society. Over the past 20 years, she has been lecturing on ancient Egyptian culture and presenting mummy research at conferences such as the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing and New England Historical Association. She lives in Worcester, MA.

Inkwell Imaginings
Mondays, October 18th and 25th at 6:00 p.m.

"Remember the first sentence you ever read? Okay, so probably not. Do you remember, though, thaWritingt wonderful feeling the vivid scenes and imagery gave you? Sweeping you up in a maelstrom of emotion, chaos, and tragic beauty that so seems to elude you no matter how many times you re-write it or bang your head on the table?

Well, welcome to the club. In the immortal words of Douglas Adams: "DON'T PANIC!" There is hope and there is help. While this group won't be the answer to all of your descriptive dilemmas we may be able to help you through at least a few scenes on your way to your ultimate masterpiece.

We welcome you with open arms and bleeding pens to Inkwell Imaginings, a writing group started by two struggling authors (much like yourself), looking to provide an outlet and support through the trials and tribulations of the writing world. While not experts we can lend a helping hand and sympathetic ear, allowing each of us to grow and empower you and your quest to become published... or just to write a story that you can be proud of."
