Jacob Edwards Library Greetings!
September has many associations and meanings - back to school being one! But at the Jacob Edwards Library the focus is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, which it has been proud to do since 2004. The official month-long celebration begins on September 15th to coincide with the anniversary of five Latin American countries celebrating their independence. Other Hispanic countries achieved independence around the same time, thus making mid-September an important time in Hispanic history.
In addition to the usual ongoing acquisitions of the library, and in preparation for this significant annual celebration, many new materials in the Spanish language have been purchased for the collections. We look forward to seeing you here and invite you to browse!
There will be several elements to the programming:
- An exhibit by Jenny Marcano: 'My World in Color' - on display through the month of September.
- Reception for the artist on Thursday, September 2nd at 6:30 p.m.
- Display of Roberto Clemente Baseball Cards
- Live Music by Son D'Plena - one night only!
- Movie Night Thursday, September 30th at 6 p.m.
Every day is library card day at JEL but to coincide with the new school year, we advocate that people consider getting a library card, if you don' t have one - as there are so many free services that this card provides access to! Think access to computers, DVDs, Wii and DS games, music CDs, and of course books and magazines - even from other libraries! It is a simple process -one only needs an official ID with your name and address on it, to get a card. |

Jenny Marcano Art Exhibit
Live Music by Son D' Plena
September 2010, Reception September 2nd at 6:30 p.m. |
Stop by the library during September to view artwork by Southbridge resident Jenny Marcano! Join us for the reception at 6:30 p.m. on September 2nd, and enjoy live music performed by local band Son D' Plena!
A little about the artist:
"My earliest memory of drawing was that of a unicorn that I'd scribbled on a piece of computer paper. I gingerly dragged a line of glue along the pencil outline of the creature and then sprinkled golden glitter over the entire paper, to be sure that lots of it stuck to the glue lines. I let it all dry
"Angel of Music" | and waited with my mother and baby brother for my father to come back from work. When he did I gave him the piece of art with childish enthusiasm, to this day he still has that unicorn in his office cubical.
My name is Jenny Marcano, I'm seventeen years old, of Puerto Rican decent, and was born and raised in this town of Southbridge. I have been taking private art classes taught by the inspirational Kathleen Coggins at her home business of Wild Vine Studios for the past nine years. From then on my passion was in creation, and with the support of my parents, mentors, and friends I've been able to grow and shape myself as an artist.
This year I will be becoming a senior at Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School and will be graduating from the Graphics Communications program that they provide. Though graphic design isn't the road I wish to travel I am very glad I have been able to gain experience with the wondrous technology that has been invented for art and design.
This will be a huge year for me as I further improve my portfolio so that I can go to college for animation. I am truly blessed for the foundation of people I have who support my dreams and want me to become successful. I hope that you all enjoy my art show, and that you work hard for your dreams, and support the dreams of your loved ones."
Jenny's work will be on display for the full month of September, in the Main Hall. Drop by to see the work of this promising artist! |

Library Box Office: Somers Town Thursday, September 9th at 6:00 p.m. | The Library Box Office Presents: Somers Town
The Friends of the Jacob Edwards Library present Somers Town, which will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Pioppi Room, lower level. Candy will be available for purchase.
Somers Town was the winner of Best Actor at the Tribeca Film Festival, and an official selection of the Berlin International and Karlovy Vary International Film Festivals.
Synopsis:"Two teenagers, both newcomers to London, forge an unlikely friendship over the course of a hot summer. Tomo (Thomas Turgoose) is a runaway from Nottingham; Marek (Piotr Jagiello), a Polish immigrant, lives in the district of Somers Town, between King's Cross and Euston stations, where his dad is working on a new rail link. When Marke agrees to let homeless Tomo move into his room, unbeknownst to his father, the pair forms a strong bond, as they work odd jobs for an eccentric neighbor and compete for the attention of Maria, a beautiful young French waitress whom they are both infatuated with. But it's only a matter of time before Marek's dad discovers what's going on..."
About the Library Box Office:
Most true independent and foreign films get squeezed out of commercial theaters by Hollywood blockbusters and face skyrocketing marketing costs that make it daunting - if not impossible - to reach appreciative audiences. The Jacob Edwards Library subscribes to the Film Movement series to bring "art house" independent and foreign films to you. |
2001: A Space Odyssey Film Screening
Saturday, September 11th, 9:30 a.m. |
By popular demand, and as this is our first Saturday open in the new school year, we are screening Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi classic, 2001: A Space Odyssey! See it on the big screen, with surround sound effects - the way it was meant to be seen!
Free popcorn and refreshments will be served, and the screening of the film will be followed by a discussion. Wear your costume and bring your inner sci-fi geek!
"A daring experiment in unconventional narrative inspired by Clarke's short story "The Sentinel," 2001 is a visual tone poem (barely 40 minutes of dialogue in a 139-minute film) that charts a phenomenal history of human evolution. From the dawn-of-man discovery of crude but deadly tools in the film's opening sequence to the journey of the spaceship Discovery and metaphysical birth of the "star child" at film's end, Kubrick's vision is meticulous and precise.
In keeping with the director's underlying theme of dehumanization by technology, the notorious, seemingly omniscient computer HAL 9000 has more warmth and personality than the human astronauts it supposedly is serving. (The director also leaves the meaning of the black, rectangular alien monoliths open for discussion.) This theme, in part, is what makes 2001 a film like no other, though dated now that its postmillennial space exploration has proven optimistic compared to reality. Still, the film is timelessly provocative in its pioneering exploration of inner- and outer-space consciousness. With spectacular, painstakingly authentic special effects that have stood the test of time, Kubrick's film is nothing less than a cinematic milestone--puzzling, provocative, and perfect." |
Book Signing: Robert Mahan
Thursday, September 16th at 6:30 p.m. |
Southbridge poet Robert Mahan will discuss his newly published volume, Inspirational Seasons, followed by a book signing (copies of the book will be available for purchase).
"While on the subway car, on the sidewalk, or at our favorite restaurant, we are surrounded by a sea of individuals who all too often become a mass ocean of humanity. While we visually see each of these individuals, how often do we dare look beneath the surface to the heart of an individual?
In the spirit of classical poetic volumes like The Spoon River Anthology, Robert Mahan captures the untold stories of the silent individuals around each of us, from the child watching his parents' divorce to the brokenhearted widow. Inspirational Seasons brings to life the hopes, dreams, and fears of the people that surround us." |

Inkwell Imaginings
Mondays, September 13th and 27th at 6:00 p.m. |
The Jacob Edwards Library is delighted to host a group for aspiring writers of both fiction and nonfiction! Inkwell Imaginings will meet on the second and fourth Mondays of every month. Read on for more information:
"Remember the first sentence you ever read? Okay, so probably not. Do you remember, though, that wonderful feeling the vivid scenes and imagery gave you? Sweeping you up in a maelstrom of emotion, chaos, and tragic beauty that so seems to elude you no matter how many times you re-write it or bang your head on the table? Well, welcome to the club. In the immortal words of Douglas Adams: "DON'T PANIC!" There is hope and there is help. While this group won't be the answer to all of your descriptive dilemmas we may be able to help you through at least a few scenes on your way to your ultimate masterpiece.
We welcome you with open arms and bleeding pens to Inkwell Imaginings, a bi-weekly writing group started by two struggling authors (much like yourself), looking to provide an outlet and support through the trials and tribulations of the writing world. While not experts we can lend a helping hand and sympathetic ear, allowing each of us to grow and empower you and your quest to become published... or just to write a story that you can be proud of." |
