Cheerleading and the Law
Cheerleading and the Law: Risk Management Strategies. Herb Appenzeller, President of Appenzeller & Associates Frederick O. Mueller, Director of the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research which is located at UNC-Chapel Hill Elizabeth H. Appenzeller, College cheerleading coach at an NCAA institution.
The emergence of sport risk management, which includes the popular activity of cheerleading, is timely and important in reducing injuries and subsequent lawsuits. A risk management plan for cheerleading is needed to meet the unprecedented growth of the sport to reduce the number of injuries and subsequent lawsuits that often follow serious injuries. The purpose of Cheerleading and the Law is to provide important guidelines in developing risk management plans with risk management strategies to create a safe environment for cheerleaders on every level. The need for such a book is evident, and the authors hope to fill a void that exists today in the ever-growing activity of cheerleading. "Without question, this book should be required reading for every athletic and school administrator, every cheer coach, every gym owner, every event producer, every parent of a cheerleader, and every company in the spirit industry . . . Cheerleading and the Law may well be one of the most important books written for the spirit industry." -Gwen Holtsclaw, President/CEO Cheer Ltd. Inc.

SITA's Helping Hand program is designed to assist outstanding squads and coaches who have limited resources or are in immediate crisis. Each year, teams submit essays describing their situation and current needs. The Helping Hand committee reviews the essays and selects a team to receive a full year of assistance from SITA member companies. Teams are given uniforms, shoes, bags, camp clothes, summer camp, registration for two regional championships, registration to a national championship, registration for a coach and captain to a coaches' conference and subscriptions to industry magazines.

Submissions for the 2008 SITA's Helping Hand program are being accepted through March 21, 2008.  Click here to download the entry form.
