HorseSpeak Weeklies
Please join us for three summer Wednesday mornings in August, for morning-fresh writing with the inspiration of horses. Greetings! Here are some Songs for the Horse Nation that we wrote yesterday in conclusion of the July Series of HorseSpeak. We had spoken of the suffering horses in the wake of the close of slaughterhouses and the coming exhibit at the Smithsonian called "A Song for the Horse Nation," honoring one of many peoples who revere horses, and we explored hands-on with Mystic how horses enlighten our own challenges in collaboration with other people. Beautiful spirits that gallop Tossing heads Coming close Cautiously at first But now leaning in, Pressing awareness of life's heat and desire.
I sing in prayer that the human nation Will awaken to your gentle and persevering curiosity, Will reflect and attend to how it is with your nation And will learn the songs you love.
-Lisa Nelson I carry you you are my protection We are companions relying on one another
Preserve us preserve the trust Horses and friends Good times and bad
Call forth the saving power Call us your own Machines cannot replace us Let us be all One Strong and worthy Honestly true The Horse Nation relies on humans like You
Be one with each other Be strong to save Care for each other unto the grave. -Ann Ainsworth You came to me young horse in a dream: Shy, curious, sensitive, skittish, Your eyes glowing bright with questions: Can I trust you? Will you trust me? What shall we do together? We approach one another, but The Others scare you away, trying to capture you. Whose permission do I need to go after you? No one seems to know, no one. But wait. Your permission is all I need. I am coming. I am coming. -Trish Broersma At our first session, Lisa Nelson, first poet above, introduced herself to us with these words: Journey the Horse Introduces Lisa
Left eye, right eye Person (lots of sound and movement all around!) Grows while walking (birds and trucks, voices!) Small strided, open empty hands (I feel very edgy!) Center of gravity a little high (I want to eat something!) No eyes? Behind glass (okay, okay who is this - safe?) Hands I search for treats (I dreamed of flying last night) Where are pockets maybe maybe? No. Darn. (I see the man who works here) Stands and will reach to touch my nose, mane, neck, shoulder (tickles!) Seems OK (new horses to know) August HorseSpeak series is Wednesday mornings, 9-11am on August 3, 10, and 24. at the Ashland Equestrian Center. $65 for the three weeks includes snacks for you and the horses.
